I'm curious what the backstory is. I know they are both really competitive teams, but I didn't realize there was that much bad blood. Is it just because of the current politics?

They’re mad because our President has called them on their bullshite, and they took it out on our hockey team in a chickenshit, cowardly manner. They raucously booed the U.S. team, as well as our National Anthem, before the game.
Much like the rest of the world is discovering about our new administration, the Canadian hockey team learned the hard way that this was a stupid, stupid course of action.
