Been debating all day about posting this, but figured what the hell.

For the past 12 years I've been a contract web developer at the CDC. Worked in the same community health program the whole time, working for multiple private companies that won the contract over that time frame. I was responsible for managing a roughly 800 page website. Our contract also included comms, admin, and health science support.
As a contractor I was not afforded the job protections that FTEs get, nor was I given back pay for any of the times the government was shut down and workers furloughed.

Got a call last night after dinner saying that the contract had been rescoped and that my job was no longer funded. The descoping took out about 60% of the staff on the contract.

It sucks, but I'm not bitter about it. I am still a proud Trump supporter. I think my biggest thing is, if all of this government fraud and waste had been curtailed many years ago (or never allowed to happen in the first place) we wouldn't be in this situation.

Sorry to hear and hope you bounce back

I would tell you to "learn to code" but I think you have that part covered

If you did good work, hold fast. It's not like they are going to let things degrade. This is a weed wack before replant.

But with what you do, you will probably have plenty of prospects.

Sounds like you have a viable skillset that will add value in the private sector.

You’ll land on your feet with something better.

Sorry you lost your job man. There will be lots of stories out there like this. Sucks. Unfortunately, it had to be done at some point.

Hopefully you get a job in the private sector soon.

Ultimately, you experienced what hundreds of thousands of Americans experience every month. Layoffs are a fact of life

I appreciate that you aren’t complaining. You’ll be fine.

Hate to hear that, but with your experience and attitude I fully expect you bounce back better than ever! I’m sure you’ll be back soon bragging about your new better job.

Your attitude is different than most and it seems like you actually got shite done. The ones that are upset are the ones that milked the teet of a government job.

Good luck and God speed, brother!

If you were overseeing an 800 page website, pretty sure you’ll have no prob finding a new and similar gig.

I feel for you though and hope you land on your feet soon

That sucks man! I’m sorry for you.

There is certainly a down side to the cutting in that there are lots of people who will feel the sting.

Unfortunately that is part of life in the private sector as well and I can tell you I lost a high six figure job and equity partnership in our lab when CMS dropped their reimbursements on some testing my company did so only the two biggest labs could compete.

Government give and government taketh away.

I pray you find something quick!

Hang in there.

I've been both public and private (currently).

I can tell you that in the everyone in the private sector worries about losing their jobs at any moment. In the public side, it doesn't cross many minds.

From my experience working with the feds (LEAs and base workers), I always felt like they could be cut about that amount and accomplish the same mission. I wonder if that’s pretty much the trend across the board with all federal agencies?

With that said, I pray things will fall back in place quickly for you. Your attitude about the situation says a lot about your character and I’m sure there are plenty of employers that would be fortunate to have you.

Good luck and as retired govt. contractor myself I understand how hard it is to leave that world with all it's perks, for the "real world",

Good news is the "real world" work experience has a good shot at improving.

That's the spirit... and why I know you won't be looking long. BTW, if in Atlanta, the power company is hiring. Great company, benefits and stability.

A serious question for you, respectfully:
taking all politics out of this....
1. do you think that you deserved to lose your job?
2. do you think that your job position was needed and served a purpose?

Thanks in advance for your honesty.
