Depends on what it's scope is. It can certainly find enough savings that can be implemented to create budget surpluses, if that's how Trump is going to address future budgets.

Could cut 1 - 1.5 T a year with some common sense spending cuts. 25 years we could be close if not out of this mess.

I think Trump is hoping for an AI Industrial Revolution type event to create the next economic boom in the US.

Eliminate? Probably not. Reduce? More likely.

Trump and Elon broke it down last night.

The goal is to cut $1T in waste, fraud, and abuse, drive down the cost of living with that, and get 3-5% growth to bump up tax receipts by $1T.

That's the hope at least.

Easily, while DOGE is in the treasury computer, they can just hit the delete button on the debt. Poof, problem solved

Yes if we can eliminate the source of those funds being spent somewhere else. There is speculation of basically being able to have a 1 trillion dollar surplus! Do it and put at least half to the National debt.

Not a chance but that doesn’t mean they aren’t helping out in identifying and hopefully eliminating waste.

I wonder how much of that debt is fraudulent debt that we can claw back from people’s and other country’s assets

Common Sense Spending Cuts

This is how it should be described by everyone going forward. I've heard "Common sense gun controls" forever. It'll be nice to turn the tables for once.

I think we can all agree we need some "COMMON SENSE SPENDING CUTS". It just rolls off the toungue, doesn't it?

Balanced budget amendment and enforce it.

You don’t need surpluses. Just a balanced budget with no further borrowing. Let all T bills mature over the next 30 years then boom debt is gone

With the way that our government is structured, I think things have to hit bottom /crash. I don’t see any way that we’ll be able to get things under control when it’s the job of our elected officials to bring money home to their state and get kickbacks from lobbyists for things that cost a lot of money

You want cuts.. The press will show sob story after sob story on why we can't make cuts.

My solution is this. For every billion dollars cut YOU get X amount of that in a check. So bam you get a 500 dollar check. And you are like damn, if we cut that bullshite over there I get more. And cut this bullshite over there I get more, and stop spending 90k for ziplock bags worth of ball bearing I get even more. You will have 95% of the people demanding to cut all kinds of shite.

No but if they can level it off inflation will take care of a lot of it.

That’s what I used to think but not anymore. There’s enough bullshite that can be cut with no impact on services …. unless you’re a foreign NGO.

And with some of this shite coming out about SS….i would assume the same with Medicare too….youcould probably slash the budget just by eliminating fraud and bullshite payments to people that shouldn’t get them. Nobody but fraudsters and crooks would even notice.

We are running on 2T deficit now. If Doge cuts 1T a year, it's not going to save us but delay the inevitable.
Usaid = 170 billions
DoE. = 240 billions
Social security =50 billions

Let's wait one more year to see the total number.

We're well past truly paying off the debt. Best we can hope for is mitigate the fallout from a century of stupidity. Some of the debt will be removed by a default, some inflated away, maybe even some paid down via real (non-inflationary) economic growth, which will probably require a new energy source. And one way or another we will get a big decrease in the size of our govt and unfunded obligations, because this level of cost is unsustainable.

Or we'll just continue apace until it all burns to the ground when the dollar evaporates in a flash.
