How underrated is this movie? Watched it tonight and while it isn't fantastic it certainly falls into the "good" category.

I think it’s one of the best movies from the early 2000s. I’m not sure if it’s underrated. It’s pretty universally praised and popular. For whatever reason it never really caught on to the rerun circuit like so many other movies from that period.

I went out and bought the book and read all 1600 pages of it. I liked the movie better.

I used to stump pretty hard for it 15ish years ago whenever the semi monthly “what are some underrated movies” thread popped up.

It's excellent, but the premise of no one recognizing him is a bit ridiculous.

Ole boy was spraying Mercedes' guts and she can't tell it's him upon his return?

One of my all time favorite books. I read it in high school, it’s one of the first books I can remember not being able to put down

If I recall correctly she saw right through him almost instantly.

After researching, there’s a 2024 movie and series, with the series starring Sam Caflin (Hunger Games and Me before You. )

What is this in regard to?

The one from 2002 is a fantastic movie. Definetly a rewatchable if I come across it. It hits the perfect tone and the casting is excellent.

I think it’s fantastic

Maybe in my personal top 5 of the 2000s

Quick update - wife and I decided to watch the 2024 version last night.

Far and away the best version and much closer to the book. Absolutely loved it.

The one that came out 10-15 years ago was good. I have the French one that just came out but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

It's way better than the older one imo. Much closer to the book.

He'd been gone for 15 years or such....there were no photographs around to look at and Dantes resurfaced as a super wealthy aristocrat.

He was basically "dead" when he went to the Chateau d'if and was thought to be as good as dead by everyone in the story.

The idea that he'd not only be alive 15 years later, but hed be out of prison, supremely wealthy, and rubbing elbows with the high society types was unthinkable given where he stood before he went to prison.
