Seeing a lot of bamboo that has turned yellow from the freezing temps.

Any idea if it will come back with new shoots or if it is all dead?

Most will send up new shoots just as big as what was there.

A few varieties may not have made it, but the vast majority will come through.

From what I understand...

Bamboo is generated from rhizomes. The rhizomes store all the the energy the plant needs to grow. We are left with two options. Either dig up the rhizomes, or cut down the plant before it shoots out leaves. This will take a few years, but its possible to kill the bamboo.

The rhizomes send out shoots each year, expending energy. Each year, cut down the shoots before they develop leaves, so no more energy is generated by the system. This will waste away the energy in the rhizomes each year, until there is no more energy to expend send shoots to the surface.

Depends on what variety of bamboo as some are very cold hardy but some will be killed by temps like yall had. It's likely it is black bamboo which grows like wildfire and is very cold hardy. I had some in a creek behind me in Dallas that would spread into my backyard. It would die back every year but send up shoots in the spring. Damn stuff would grow from 6" to 5' overnight and beb15' tall in a week.

Some varieties are but other varieties are clumping and don't spread as aggressively as the rhizome varieties.

Glad this happened to mine, and I have the clumping variety.

I am in serious need of a "cut back" on my bamboo!! Can't find anyone to provide a price I am willing to pay, and I ain't cheap!

There are a lot of brown palm trees in my area, going to be interesting how many survived the snow.

I have a lot of bamboo the former owner planted. It was burned by the cold but I know it will come back unfortunately. I was told the only way to really get rid of it was to cut it down, pour diesal on it and light it up.

I like it. I like the looks of it in the right context. But most people's experience is with speeding bamboo that is a PIA to control. I specify clumping bamboo on projects, usually Alfonse Karr variety as it's cold hardy and can take extreme heat.

Yeah I have it as a corner border in both front corners, and as a giant hedge in the back. It’s clumping and it has grown much wider, from a one gallon pot size to probable 4-5’ in diameter at the base making it take up probably 20’ in diameter coverage per plant, which is exactly what I wanted. But we have a lot of space and I planted it far enough away where it’s growth hasn’t cause me any issues.

Same here. It looks cool when properly tended to and provides great cover. I bind it together about a third to halfway up leaving the shaded bottom area looking like little caves in between.

Yeah, the bamboo we planted at our old house was amazing. We have mature bamboo at our current house, and it's also amazing.

I think the biggest issue most people have it planting too much in a small space. A bunch of bamboo on a postage stamp lot is not good.

Is there a good nursery in BR/Prairieville area for bamboo and does it do well in pots?

I like the look of bamboo and the other benefits. But the growth rate I do not love.

I don’t remember so much brown during the ice storm when it was icicles for a few days.
No doubt another big hedging season will be here soon.

I had an ingenious yard guy who came up with an effective way to restrict growth of bamboo clumps.

Cut to the ground all shoots and canes around base until the clump is the size you want. He used an electric chain saw and hand shears. Then he used a small stump grinder to dig out the rhizomes from the cleared-out zone. Some of the rhizome bits resprouted but were easily weeded out. The small grinder he rented had lawnmower-like handles and could work in tight areas.

The same technique permanently removed nandina, also a bamboo.
