Gout vs Kidney Stones,..

I have had around ten stones in my life though none in the last 8 years (Knock on wood.) I had my first gout attack last week in my left big toe area.
Stones still win as to debilitating pain but it is not a knockout. I could not sleep or let a sock or anything touch that foot without pain,

I thought I broke it or something when I finally saw a doctor. It was cool that the treatment is a 3500 year old medicine which cleared most of the pain quickly..

While finding adequate treatment is nice, have you looked into and been successful in exploring prevention?

There’s a lot that can be done in your diet so that you don’t have to ever get to the point to worry about treatment.

Yes, and the prevention is good for my general health.

Most definitely! Not only would eliminate many of the stones and gout, but you should see improvements in many areas with diet changes like that. Well done.

I’ve never had kidney stones and hearing horror stories makes me deeply grateful.

I did have gout in my left big toe a few year ago and I was really unprepared for how awful it was. I had to sleep with my foot out of the covers because just a top sheet laying on my foot felt like someone had my toe in a vice. I couldn’t wear normal shoes until the flare up settled. Overall it was quite terrible.

I used to get kidney stones and totally changed things up. Got rid of Dr. Pepper and now just drink a boatload of water and haven't had one since thankfully.

They suck so bad but glad you're on the up and up

The weight of a bed sheet even hurts. So you take the sheet off.

Then the breeze from the ceiling fan hurts.

Take two endomethacin, Drink a gallon of water. Go to sleep because the endomethacin will make you nauseous. Wake up in two hours and you won't know you had pain.

It's not always about diet. Gout can also be triggered by injury. The only time I have an outbreak is when I injure my toe, usually stubbing it trying to walk in the dark.

Also, gout and kidney stones are related, as uric acid can also form kidney stones.

This. Just getting an allopurinal prescription and taking it will keep you from ever getting another attack. Diet can help too but sometimes you may just have a genetic disposition to getting gout.

For example, my grandfather was 6 foot tall, 145lbs, lean muscle build type of guy. No fat and ate pretty good. However if he thought about eating any kind of processed meats like hot dogs, potted meat, Vienna sausage, etc.. he would get a gout attack.

Could eat steak and pork chops all day long and never get an attack. Touched processed meats and it was a different story.

I'm the same way. Pretty much never have it unless I happen to mix in processed meat into my diet temporarily, which is why I try to avoid it.

Gout is incredibly painful. I lost about 10lbs and haven't had a gout attack in about 15 years, knock on wood. Lose some weight and see what happens, YMMV.

Colchicine gave me the worst case of the runs I ever had. Now I know what having dysentery is like. Would not recommend.

Yeah had a doc write a prescription for me that read take until pain is gone or stomach is upset. Almost a case where the cure is worse that the disease. Almost.

Gout is hands down the worst pain I've ever felt. I get it in the arch of my foot. It was so bad once that I genuinely would have cut my foot off if I could have made it to the kitchen to get a knife.

Tried diet modifications, but that didn't work. Finally got on Allo to lower my uric acid levels and it's been clear sailing since then. Some people are just genetically predisposed to it. My grandfather had it. My dad had it. I have it. My son will probably have it at some point.

Kidney stones are caused by drinking cokes and gout is caused by eating processed food

I never had a problem with this one. Indomethacin is the one that fricked me up.

bullshite. Depends on your Uric acid levels and how chronic the gout is. I lived with gout for 20 years with 1-2 attacks a year for a couple of days. I finally got on allopurinol and had some of the worst flare ups I’ve ever had. Seems the Uric acid crystals in the joints would dissolve into the blood stream and find new areas to cause flare ups.

Took about two years of monthly flare ups to level out.

Had both, both are by far the worst pain I’ve ever felt internally and externally.

That said I’d rather have a gout attack if I was forced to choose because you can elevate your foot and chill on the couch and be comfortable as long as nothing touches your foot.

There is no comfort with a kidney stone. Just constant pain until it passes.
