A victory by the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 would be beneficial to Basketball Hall of Famer Pat Riley's financial portfolio.

Per Front Office Sports, since Riley has had variations of the term "three-peat" trademarked for years, the NFL reached an agreement with his camp to use the phrase on various merchandise if the Chiefs are able to win their third straight Super Bowl by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Riley originally filed to trademark the term "three-peat" in 1989 when he was head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and they were pursuing their third consecutive championship.

He filed for a new trademark in May 2014 to use "3-peat" on any jewelry and sports memorabilia when the Miami Heat, who has been team president for since 1995, were going for their third straight title.

Per the United States Patent and Trademark Database (h/t NPR's Joe Hernandez), Riley's company, Riles & Company Inc., own at least six trademarks for variations of the "three-peat" phrase.

Kind of funny that Pat Riley owns the trademark for 3peat, considering he failed to win a 3peat on 2 separate occasions. Especially when the Bulls completed the 3peat on 2 separate occasions.

So you think the NFL should wait until after the game and if KC wins then negotiate? LoL You realize people literally go to the stores and online right after a team wins to buy Championship merchandise right?

Lol… They print Super Bowl shirts for BOTH teams before the Super Bowl. No wonder you think it’s rigged. You have no idea how any of this works.

I’m not taking a stance either way but to think that this action is evidence that it is rigged is absolutely idiotic lol

Does the agreement require Jimmy Butler to play receiver for the Chiefs next year?

I'm sure that was a fat check for Pat Riley.

Seems like something that shouldn't be able to be trademarked.
