Mexican president orders retaliatory tariffs against U.S

In a lengthy post on X, Sheinbaum stressed her government does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but collaboration and dialogue.
The leftist leader, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, touted her government's record since she took office in October, seizing 20 million doses of deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, in addition to detaining over 10,0000 individuals tied to drug trafficking.
Trump said the tariffs against Mexico were due to the country's failure to stop fentanyl getting into the United States as well as what he describes as uncontrolled migration.

So she is using tariffs as a punitive economic measure? Odd since I’ve been told relentlessly that tariffs are merely a tax on consumers with no effect on the country of origin.

Pure PR. Feeble attempt at a show of strength. Anyone with more than 2 brain cells to rub together, can see this for what it is. There is absolutely a country who massively depends on another country, economically, will go to economic war with them.
At the end of the day, a whole lot of Mexican citizens will be repatriated back home, the cartels (now classified as terrorists) will pull back, and we will all be better off. A big bonus will be that certain politician with personal stakes in the Mexico grift, will be exposed or worse.

Not a fan of tariffs but Mexico will lose this. Trump will surely know there are even more levers he can pull that hurt Mexico. They will buckle if he taxes the hell out of remittances. He can also declare Mexico a state sponsor of terrorism due to its ties with the cartels. He should probably issue an order for all Americans to leave Mexico. They will soon become targets.
