It's pretty clear that Cam is a "me first" guy. Just look at his lack of effort to cover the fumble in the Super Bowl.

Of course...

This is no surprise. He's always been a me, not we, kinda guy.

He dresses like this... are you surprised at his answer?

A Super Bowl ring requires so much that you can’t control, like great teammates… while an MVP is more a true measure of elite skill

No surprise there, Cam has always been about himself. In a team sport, he only cares about personal accolades. He should also return the hats he's stolen from Erykah Badu.

No shock.

Cam was always about Cam.

He's not completely wrong but, per usual, he presents his thoughts horribly.

Translation: Winning a Super Bowl is a reflection of an entire team gelling to achieve a team goal. It takes more than me, or one singular player, doing his job well. Winning an MVP is a reflection of one player playing the absolutely best he could have relative to his peers. As a far as quantifying my career as an individual player, no I wouldn't trade that for a Super Bowl ring because a Super Bowl ring in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean someone was great (see Dilfer and Johnson), but sure winning a Super Bowl is something I certainly wish I could have done in my career.

When was the last time an MVP came from a team that wasn’t a Super Bowl contender? You can be the best player in the league, but if you play on a last place team then you aren’t coming anywhere close to winning the MVP

Have you seen him in the past 5 years? That's like a blue jeans and white t shirt equivalent of how he dresses now.

And that's why he was a pussy and didn't dive for a fumble in the superbowl.

In a league that has predetermined winners from a game standpoint, I would agree that an individual award would mean more. There’s a LOT you can’t control for a positive team outcome. You can field a team of first team all pro players, but if you aren’t meant to win, you won’t win. Not to mention the injury risk that can cause you to lose everything, especially if you haven’t signed a post rookie deal.

I get what he’s saying, but it’s still a douchy thing to say.

He could have played exactly the same in 2015 and maybe Tom Brady or Russell Wilson plays slightly better and wins MVP instead. Not winning the award in that scenario does not equal “not doing your job”.

He’s free to value individual achievement over team achievement of course, but there’s no rationale that would make this a non-selfish and non-douchy position.

So Cam Newton cares more about personal accomplishments than his team. Color me shocked

Dan Marino said the same thing. He was asked if he would trading being a HOFer for a Super Bowl ring and he said “Definitely not.”
