The Red Army stumbled upon Auschwitz 80 years ago today...

January 27, 1945.
As Soviet forces continued to advance steadily through the western half of Poland, units from the 322nd Rifle Division arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp around 3:00 in the afternoon. They found 7,000 survivors who had been too weak to move by their SS guards. The rest of the camp's inmates had been moved further westward days before the Red Army's arrival. The Soviets also found 600 corpses, 370,000 men's suits, 837,000 articles of women's clothing, and 7.7 tons of human hair.
The camp had opened in 1940 and was originally meant to house Polish prisoners of war. However, it soon turned into a concentration camp to house slave labor before being transformed into an extermination camp for Jews, Russian prisoners of war, and other undesirables in early 1942. It is estimated that some 1.1 million people would eventually perish in the Auschwitz concentration system over the course of its use by the Nazis.

I'm not normally one of those guys, but I don't think I could set foot in there without Holy Water, Bible, and a Rosery.

And to think, so many still want to deny this happened.
I don’t deny any numbers, or that any atrocities were real.
I do wonder why any group hell bent on extinction of a race would take the time to tattoo them or spend the money to cut their hair. Why give them prison uniforms? Why provide them with razors for shaving?
I will never understand the lengths Germany went, to spend funds on these people during a war effort, on a group of people that they wanted exterminated.
I have looked for books on this topic but they always trend towards the denial side.

I wish all those in 2020 wanting the unvaccinated to be rounded up and put in camps be forced to tour Auschwitz

I've never been to Auschwitz but I've been to Dachau and that was a lot to absorb.

This. They didn’t necessarily want to extinguish them if they could find a use for them. They were used in experiments, for labor, for target practice, you name it. They spent effort only to track how much effort it took to keep them productive in their sense.

They were not all getting killed. Many were slave labor plus they were moved from camp to camp. I read Geddy Lee’s autobiography and found out his parents met in a concentration camp. His father was in six different camps. He was a big, strong man so the Germans liked him as a worker.

In 1992, a young Jewish man named David Cole took a tour of Auschwitz. He also interviewed Dr. Francis Piper - the Director of the Auschwitz Museum. Cole ended up making a documentary about his tour & was later interviewed on the Phil Donahue show. Pretty interesting watch.

My trip there in 2019 is easily one of the best and worst trips I’ve ever made. I saw the human hair, and the piles of and piles of shoes, clothes, and baby toys, but my brain still couldn’t fathom what happened there.

I’ve been and it’s indescribable seeing the piles of belongings from the gassed victims as well as walking through the small gas chamber in Auschwitz I.

I visited Dachau, very harrowing and creepy. I think the signs over the gate are the same “hard work will set you free”. Something like that

It sounds like you should read about the Wannsee Conference

I've been to Auchwitz 1 and it was surreal. Even went into the gas chamber where they died. Horrific.

That recent movie with the family living in the house at the camp was really erie
To think you had to live there as the person running the camp

I forgot how many more millions of Jews were killed under Stalin.

And the Reds didn't really do much for the victims
