Um. If I don't go check will that mean that I don't have snow in my attic?

Yeah I've always had ridge vents, been through lots of snow. It doesn't just pile up in the attic.

A. Mike Keogh, a specialist in energy conservation and ventilation from Campbellford, Ont., responds: Upgrading existing ventilation when reroofing is a smart move -- an opportunity that is missed all too frequently. But should you add a ridge vent to a roof with gable vents? No way -- that's a prescription for disaster. Gable vents will alter the air flow around the ridge vent and, especially when wind is parallel to the ridge (at right angles to the gable), can actually reverse air flow through the ridge vent, pulling rain or snow into the attic

Wow, what a mess.

Id get up there with some plastic totes and a dust pan and start removing that before it melts. Probably a wet/dry shop vac (no filter) too.

A few years ago wind blown snow accumulated between the whirly thing and fireplace....became a block of ice, melted and dripped onto the ceiling near the fireplace

Follow this baw's advice.

I had some snow blow in through my ridge vents at our previous house. Didn't know it until I started seeing water stains on my ceiling. After I crawled my arse up there to see what was going on, I removed the snow that hadn't melted and started painting my ceilings after everything dried out.

GET THE SNOW OUTTA THERE BEFORE IT STARTS MELTING!

No snow in our attic!

that not due to the ridge vents, that due to bad construction and install. Your ridge vents should still have covers on them.

So funny story.

I have cellulose insulation.

I almost had a heart attack at first glance going into the attic after reading this thread.
