Extended family member puts a boat and motor for sale online.

I offer him $1000 for just the motor.

He says no, the motor is worth more than that, plus it will hinder selling the whole rig if there's not motor.

OK, that's fine, and understandable. But my offer stands.

A few months later, see him at a family function. Reminded him my offer still stands.

He says he decided to just donate it to Goodwill.

Instead of giving me a really good deal on motor I really wanted, collecting $1000 from me, donating the rest of the boat, and hell donate the $1000 from me as well, he simply just gave it all away.

I say he's the a-hole.

Or am I the a-hole for being offended by him simply making a donation to charity?

EDIT- the whole boat and motor combined was worth, max, $5k. No big tax write-off involved on this.

What's the write off difference w/o a motor? I guess that's your answer.
But still kinda dick, imo.

You are.

It is his stuff to do wat he wants with. You are going to be selfish over someone being philanthropic? Because you did not get your way?

Yeah, it is you.

As others are saying, he may write it all off to significantly lower his AGI on his 2025 taxes.

He's retired, he doesn't itemize his tax return. And the whole rig altogether wasn't more than $5k value. The standard deduction for married filed jointly eclipses that.

He didn't actually donate a frickin boat motor to Goodwill ya dumbass. He gave it to his mistress to keep her husband from blowing them both up on Facebook

Honestly I don’t think there’s much difference. Don’t they just write down how much you think it’s worth. Boat values are all over the place.

He probably could have told them the same amount w/o the motor and had 1k in his pocket. Sounds like he’s an idiot.
