Grandson went to an outdoor range in Austin that prohibited full metal jacket

He bought his pride and joy new to him one day ar-15 and went to a range to shoot and learn. The range told him he could not use 223 full metal jacket rounds. So he had to buy some hollow points at 35 dollars a box.
Question, what is the difference to the range as regards style of bullets
question, was he just getting ripped off.

Sounds like it.

I've seen ranges disallow some steel core, AP, and occasionally steel jacketed but never regular FMJ. Tell him to pick another range.

Green tips (steel core) aren't allowed at many ranges. It damages the steel armor at the back of most indoor ranges.

"Thanks for the information, I'll be right back."
Drive to walmart.
Return to range.
"Okay, I got the right stuff."

Its surprising they even allowed guns with how much Austin has changed over the last 20 years.
I have only ever seen a range not allow FMJ 1 time. It was an indoor rifle range with only 50' lanes. They said that it was mainly because they had a problem with people with AR pistols firing steel core. It was just a quick easy way for them to inspect ammo by banning FMJ.

When I worked at a gun range, we kept a large magnet for that very reason. Simply hold the bullet tip up to the magnet.

I know of one range in DFW with that rule but it’s certainly not common.

FMJ loaded rounds, especially the cheap military stuff and Russian Tula ammunition that use steel jackets can create sparks when hitting certain objects: steel target frames, quartz/granite rocks, etc… Dry grass, shot-out cardboard backing and paper target remnants on the ground down range could emulate “kindling” if contacted by FMJ sparks. FMJ ammo is prohibited to protect against range fires.
Frangible or lead soft point / ballistic tip bullets are designed to fragment upon impact and not cause sparks.

I can understand anything that has to do with Steel. But as someone else mentioned, by range will just run a magnet on my ammo. Copper jacket FMJ vs. Hollow Point as it relates to damage to the range, I just can't see a difference.

The ranges I've gone to allow M855 by exception as they are not steel core, just have a 10gr mild steel slug in the tip.

That's bullshite, I've been on military ranges with frangible 5.56 and it absolutely sparks on steel baffle plates. Copper jacketed FMJ or soft point....exactly the same in terms of spark potential. There is zero reason to ban them outside of some ignorant Fudd range owner trying to gouge customers.

Indoor or outdoor range?

gun ranges can be really sheisty. go to one that claims all spent brass is now the property of the range, and try to put a shell catcher on your rifle. see how that turns out for you

My old range (literally cancelled membership today) doesn't let you collect brass, but does allow brass from the floor catchers. Now that I reload, it was a big part of me moving to a new range a little further away that lets you collect. Not the only reason, but a factor.

You are right, absolutely. It’s their decision. But there’s absolutely 0 reason to do this, and this is a guy that’s shot all across the country and plenty in dry climates. I would never go to an outdoor range that requires non fmj, it’s laughable. And sure indoor ranges there’s some reasons, but I wouldn’t spend routine time there.

There was a fire in Colorado a while back called the gun range fire ( or something close to that. Determined fire was started from an FMJ bullet making sparks
I did see a video a month or so ago with a range master talking about fmj’s starting a fire in the rubber pellet backstop some ranges use.
Probably very rare, but I’m sure it’s possible. Maybe an insurance requirement

Quail Creek? I like shooting there over elm fork. But the do prohibit fmj.

Fossil Pointe range near Decatur, TX doesn't allow FMJ but they did make an exception during the pandemic ammo shortage.
