The goal in college football is to win, not set offensive records.

Looking at the playoffs this year, there wasn't a single QB I'd take ahead of Nussmeier, and that's with the knowledge that Nuss isn't perfect.

Looking at the final 4 QBs, you had Will Howard, Riley Leonard, Drew Allar and Quin Ewers. Ewers is probably the best of those, and ironically he made the most fatal mistake of the 4 (giving up the strip-sack while trying to tie the game late).

Just seems like you want to get a guy "good enough", and elevate the talent across the board with your NIL money (like we're doing in the portal right now), instead of dumping a ton into one guy. Cam Ward and Shaduer Sanders didn't make the playoffs. Michigan didn't win last year because McCarthy was a generational QB. Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix didn't make the playoffs (probably would have in field of 12), Drake Mayes and Caleb Williams weren't close.

I would have liked to have Underwood, but there is no denying, some of his money helped us get o ther players at other positions of need with the $$

Would it been awesome to have kept Underwood? Absolutely.

Would LSU have built a roster as well rounded as they have for next season if Underwood had stayed? Most likely not.

LSU has a top 5 team in the nation next year and gearing up for a run.

Nuss is way better than all of these guys

We just need defense

It undoubtedly made the 2025 team better; beyond that, we don't know. It set LSU on a path to miss "elite" quarterbacks across two recruiting cycles.

Remember when most of the Rant said there was NO way Underwood would flip. Said he had a big LSU chain....so he was a LOCK.

That was cute!

So one quarterback whose family history proved he wasn’t coming and one that chose a late deal worth millions.

The current trend is showing that most freshman aren’t staying at their respective schools anyway.

And?

Like I said, Will Howard and Riley Leonard are not "elite". One will win a title. JJ McCarthy wasn't, Stetson Bennett wasn't. I think you have to go back to Joe Burrow for the last "elite" guy to win.

It's not "copium", it's financial reality: we (and most schools) have a finite budget for NIL and such. 1 guy, even at QB, isn't enough to flip the scales completely. You need to spread that wealth across the entire team, and lift the talent level. Last year, if a defense could get 2-3 stops against Jayden for the entire game, they probably beat LSU. Because LSU wasn't stopping them more than twice. So having a super-elite QB (and he was) didn't do it for us.

I think the same concept applies to coaches now. Kelly's "good enough", and if he dumps some of his salary back into the pot (maybe he can't pay NIL directly, but he frees someone else up to), it's better than cutting bait and getting a different coach. We'd need to pay buyouts and hire a new guy, and the issue of buying talent would remain the same as it is now.

Explain your position.

If we sink a ton into any one guy, even a QB (and an unproven one at that), what guarantee is there that we're any better than 2023? DC's and schemes help a bit, but you need guys who can play ultimately. There's a reason we're shopping for corners and safeties right now.
And let's remember Kelly saying we'd be more aggressive in the portal due to losing Underwood, and freeing up some cash.

Would you rather a solid team across the board, or a team that is unbalanced?

I 100% hope you're right, but the optimism is based on incoming freshmen and incoming portal guys who have never played a down for LSU yet. Most have never played a down in the SEC.

With Nuss, the offense will always be good/great. LSU's success will boil down to defense, same as it's been for several years.

You can’t look at that. Each team is different. Imagine if Michigan would have had a superstar qb. They might still be playing

The way I’ve looked at it is Brian Kelly and LSU made the best of a shitty situation. Underwood flipping at the last minute after giving no indication he would sucked, plain and simple. BK and LSU didn’t sit around worrying about that loss. They took the NIL money set aside for Underwood and hit the portal on a spending spree, filling much needed holes in the roster.

Who knows if Nuss would have stayed if he was going to share time possibly? I also like to believe all things happen for a reason, just need to be ready to pivot which we did greatly using the money for guys we need now.

He may have saved us from ourselves... overpaying for one guy rather than build a better roster overall.
