Two days before Christmas some shithead hit our 4yr old cane corso and neglected to stop and let us know. No idea if we could have rushed him to the vet or do anything. Very downbeat holiday for the kids

We have 30+ acres and live on a long dirt road. Me and my in-laws have 3 nice homes spread across the property, but a half mile + down our road? Rough. Like, bad. The decent neighbors I do have have stuff walk off all the time

Here’s my question. My Cane Corso was a specimen. But despite their reputation, was a total hippie. Just a teddy bear that was so up our arse anytime we were outside or let him in briefly we’d fall down over him and couldn’t even rake the yard. People refer to them as “Velcro dogs” apparently in that they have an unquenchable need for physical contact. Awesome with the kids but if you stood still he’d lean on you with all his body weight and keep pushing you over lol And had no interest in trespassers whatsoever

Our next dog we get we plan to leave indoors at least 80% of the time. And we want another larger sized dog. Obviously great with kids but one that isn’t fricking around with riff raff up and down our road and in our yard at night potentially. Not super worried about cost. I know any blue blood is sky high these days

My brother in law says labs are naturally territorial and protective of family? I’d never heard that. But I love a big beautiful box head chocolate lab. I had an amazing Bullmastiff about 15yrs ago and wouldn’t mind another one of those at all either

Starting over this soon is pretty tough, but the fact is we need a dog on the property out here

Sorry for the mini-novel but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im sure there’s numerous breeds im not considering

RIP Grady

Sorry to hear about your pup.

Labs are very protective. Mine will not let a strange dog around my wife or kids.

That being said, you need a German Shepard.

Thank yall sincerely. It was heartbreaking to explain to the kids around Christmas. We had hoped they be preoccupied but I have a 12 & 4 yr old and they noticed his absence almost immediately

Get you a Bernie. Bernese mountain dog. Listens better than my kids. Acts like what you described your previous was. Has a goofy dumbass side while being a massive dog.

He’s a puppy btw 15 mths.

I’ve got a Catahoula that is awesome and a pain in my arse. My wife and kids and a lady I work with are the only people that can touch my truck, house, or yard without her raising pure hell. She is also a Velcro dog. She wants to be with me 247. Great defense dog. Great with my kids and great with anybody once she knows you are ok. She hasn’t bit anybody yet that I know of. Multiple people have had to change their britches though.

Bullmastiff, German Shepard, Lab, or a rescue mutt.

Our “lab” we rescued from the pound is solid black and looks and acts like a small black lab but definitely has some other breeds. Loving with family and friends but very protective once outside our house especially with other animals. The vet just calls her a black dog, lol.

I’m partial to rescues and recommend trying that route. You can bring the dog home and meet the family for a day or two before committing as well.

Remember every breed has certain traits but all dogs are different.

One of my female Labs barks at everyone and fur on her back stands up when.

Other female lab will bring a stranger her ball to throw for her. Not sure if a lab is what you’re looking for.

If I had acreage I’d get a Great Pyrenees but not sure how they do inside.

Beautiful dog my man. My good friend is shopping for one right now. How would one handle S Ga heat? Despite being a shorthair, my cane corso would dig holes halfway to China out in my yard to lay in cool dirt lol I can’t tell you how many times ive had to put the bucket on the tractor and fill craters in the yard. And do they shed?

I've heard of people getting them for pets and they're disappointed because they're ambivalent about people and don't care about being inside.

A family member got one that had been a livestock dog for 5 years, owner died and extended family didn't want a dog. That dog freaking LOVES being retired and living indoors. She spends a fortune on grooming (it's not a fortune to her) and you could still stuff a mattress with the hair it sheds, but it's by her side 24/7 and couldn't be happier. Very laid back temperament, the dog acts stoned half the time unless there's a hawk or other large bird in the area.

Im leaning heavy this way. My last one was phenomenal. Wasn’t super protective because I lived at the beach at the time and was single and took him everywhere I went. He was practically the mascot at my fav bar and had been around 1000s of people and animals. Not confident anything bad would happen if someone climbed in my window lol But coolest dog ever

ETA. Great visual deterrent I guess. If the meth monkeys way down my road knew he was around itd probably be good enough

German Shepherd

Amazing animals

Incredibly smart - Can and will learn anything-easily
Loyal
Protective

Gotta make them part of the family. Take them everywhere with you. Needs lots of exercise-especially when they are young. Can't and shouldn't be left alone for more than 4 or 5 hours. Otherwise they will suffer separation anxiety and wreck shite.

Only downside to them is the year around shedding. Lots of fur balls. So, keep that in mind.

Really sorry to hear this. I would have a hard time controlling myself if someone hit my dog and ran. That's messed up.

As for your next move, if you have 30 acres and want something that is perhaps intimidating to trespassers or criminals, (both human and animal) but also very cuddly and loyal, I'd suggest the Great Pyrenees. Get two. They like to operate in pairs on a land that size. There is also a gross overpopulation so you can likely get them for free ASAP.

It will take a while for them to get used to you and your land (6-12 mos) and should be inside more at first especially if they are juvenile. But they are good family dogs and ferocious defenders of your property.

Also they have that oversize white lab look with the blocky head. This is a photo I found on the web. If you need help training them to operate on your land, there are a couple good facebook groups withe multiple posts per day and some genuine experts out there, which helps a lot.

RIP ol boy.
I am on my third lab and all of mine have been somewhat territorial and barked or growled at people they don’t know. My UPS guy even told me he could tell if I was home or out of town just based on how my current dog barks.
That being said I truly think if a crackhead walked up with a tennis ball he would fetch it not attack.

My Bernie deals with south Louisiana heat. We have him inside trained so he gets AC. I also have him setup in an inside corner of the house with a bed a window unit. They want cold. He is currently living the wet cold rain here. I will say that he needs exterior room to roam and run if possible.

He is also a gentle giant. I can send you photos and videos of him and my 4 year old. She’s 30 lbs and he is 135. She has him walking a line. He’s afraid to upset her. My two older boys 9 and 10 rough house a bit, but when he is ready he will paw slap the lights out of you. Then apologize.

Overall he’s a simply great dog that I didn’t know I needed. His favorite snack is gold fish crackers and he loves coffee.
