I don't know college basketball well enough to know the big names at smaller schools. Who are the guys that will drop their current school to come to LSU and can make use of its resources?

That's right. Do my research for me.

Two years ago I would have said Scott Drew. Not sure if that's still the case, though.

LSU men's basketball can pull from two types of candidates: 1) mid-majors who may or may not succeed at the major level (Nate Oats, Dan Hurley, Todd Golden, Matt McMahon); or 2) coaches who have won -- even won big -- elsewhere but have some baggage (Bruce Pearl, Rick Barnes, Kelvin Sampson or even John Calipari). Sadly, it's not like football, and LSU is considered one of the best jobs in the country. LSU basketball needs someone who can also sell the program, think Dale Brown and Will Wade. Will Wade absolutely slayed his news conference in the middle of the LSU Union. Matt McMahon did not, and LSU was wise to have a more traditional location for his introduction.

To answer your question, TJ Otzelberger at Iowa State was put into nearly the same situation as LSU, having to rebuild an entire roster upon his hiring, and he's been super successful in Ames, with an NCAA Tournament victory over LSU. This is pie in the sky, as the original question suggests. I'd like to think that Chris Jans from Miss State would succeed here.

Is Billy Donovan happy with the Bulls? Could you persuade him to return to college at this time? For Florida, that would be like Spurrier going to South Carolina.

I can’t see LSU backing the truck up for a basketball hire. You can’t be the top spender in every sport. This board has melted down about the resources required in football in this era. That isn’t changing. At the same time, LSU is spending a buttload more than their peers on women’s basketball. LSU will always be a top spender in baseball, fans won’t accept anything less. LSU just got a first round lock to campus, they are spending big money.

You can’t have it all. Resources aren’t unlimited.

Belichek is 72 and was just hired for the UNC job.

George Karl is 73 and not doing much of anything.

What about Greg Marshall? I’m not saying he is a back the truck up kind of hire But he did some pretty good things at Wichita state when he was there. Has it been long enough since his discretions for someone to give him another chance?

Alan Huss would be a great choice. He is a former assistant at Creighton University and is currently the head coach at High Point University. He replaced Tubby Smith's son who had run the program into the ground. He will not be at High Point for long; the Panthers ae currently 13-4.
