Wasn't Golden available when we hired MM?

I don’t know the answer but at the time lsu was under expected sanctions pre non-ncaa collegiate sports. Lsu and wade were born 1-2 years too early

The mistake wasn’t hiring McMahon at the time. The mistake was giving him so much guaranteed in his contact.

The mistake was kicking Wade to the curb while other programs stood behind their coaches regardless of the sanctions held over their head.

Getting a HC job isn’t easy. Without the benefit of guarantees, an existing, successful HC is not risking leaving their current school and joining a school with severe issues. BK and MM both needed time/guarantees to get them here given the situations. Any agent for a HC would have insisted. Otherwise, you’re taking a flyer on a Coordinator making the jump.

Just a bad deal all the way around. No one was coming who was at a top tier program, and an up and comer wasnt leaving for LSU without a massive deal. We got the best guy we could, it just hasn't worked out. MM is here through next season I'd say.

We would've already fired Golden because of the cloud of negativity from his perving on coeds.

At the time McMahon had the better career resume. In fact, McMahon beat Golden in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that year.

LSU had very little negotiating leverage at the time. McMahon, who had the best one-bid-league team in the nation that year had other options besides LSU (who had just fired their coach after receiving a NOA) Notably, South Carolina (amongst others). The contract he ultimately signed was NOT incredibly onerous given the circumstances. The yearly salary put him roughly in the middle of the SEC among all coaches. 6 new hires were made that cycle. McMahon arguably had the best resume of all except Mike White (who had just flamed out at Florida). Today, McMahon's salary has him near the bottom of the league. So when you take into account salary inflation among the league's coaches it's not like he's being paid a ton relative to the rest of the league. In fact, he's not.

You can, and I have, argued that a 7 year deal was at least 1 year too long, maybe 2 years. But again, LSU was not in a great negotiating position. While harsh sanctions were always unlikely, they could not 100% guarantee ANY new coach there wouldn't be significant sanctions. That means they had to offer some sort of stability to any new HC. That stability was in the form of the length of contract that was a little out of norm.

It was NOT a sin to hire McMahon at the time. The "sin" will be to hold on to him too long if/when it becomes clear he's not going to ever be able to compete at a significantly high level in this league. That is seemingly becoming more apparent every game.

Pearl is old and experienced enough to have a fall guy
Self has 2 natties

Wade probably could have survived if he had either.

Not when he’s on a recorded line.

it sucks but the idea we should have just stuck to our guns is pretty meh.

Wade was also paying shite out of his own pocket, doesn’t speak well to our NIL situation.

Should've. Golden is who I wanted.

A younger guy with an identity and energy.

This should be mcmahon's last season. Hopefully woodward hires the right coach this time around.

Other programs weren’t facing investigations that included their cash cow football program as well. Some of you may be invested enough in the basketball program that you think it was worth risking football sanctions. Most LSU fans wouldn’t agree. Even if the chances were small of a major penalty, they were big enough that it wasn’t worth the gamble. There’s also the matter of integrity.

The ignorance of what Will Wade was actually accused of and what he actually did wrong is mind boggling.

I'm not going to argue MM had the better resume and I'm not going to pretend that I wanted him all along because of hindsight.

I do hope that game had nothing to do with the decision though. Murray St ran the OVC and made the tourney about every other year through many different coaches (many of whom got bigger jobs, most of whom didn't pan out). San Fran has to deal with the Zags and St Mary's and that was their first tourney appearance since the 90s. There's levels to programs even among the mid majors and Murray St is clearly a tier or two above SF

Florida hired him first. Florida hired Golden on March 18. LSU hired McMahon on March 22. Golden should've been the choice, but perhaps he wasn't up to the monumental rebuild facing the program at the time. I also agree he might've been let go here when accused of sexual harassment and stalking.
