Will be a very big impact, especially when combined with the St. James Formosa plant eventually getting approved.

Hyundai planning new multibillion dollar steel mill in south Louisiana

Korean auto giant Hyundai is planning to build a multibillion dollar steel mill in Ascension Parish to supply its Hyundai and Kia vehicle assembly plants in the U.S., creating roughly 1,300 full-time jobs and notching a potential major economic development opportunity for south Louisiana, according to sources familiar with the project.

Hyundai and Louisiana officials agreed on tax and other incentives in December, according to one of the sources, and Hyundai could break ground as soon as 2026. The project will require approvals from state and local regulators. If approved, it could be up and running by 2029, according to several sources with knowledge of the project.

The new facility would be built on several hundred acres of sugar cane fields near Donaldsonville, about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge. The land was re-zoned by the parish several years ago for industrial use and is part of an industrial “megapark” that state and local economic development officials have promoted to companies in search of land for new chemical or manufacturing plants.

Hyundai is expected to spend more than $6 billion on the facility, which would be powered by natural gas, and create hundreds of construction jobs in addition to the permanent ones, the sources said.

It is not clear when the company will announce the project. Gov. Jeff Landry declined to comment on the project. Several Ascension Parish officials also declined to discuss the deal.

Hyundai did not respond to a request for comment. The Korea Economic Daily, a business newspaper in South Korea, said Tuesday that Hyundai was considering a new steel mill in Louisiana. The company told the newspaper that it has “been considering investing in the U.S. But nothing has been determined in that regard.”

quote:

The plant would be built by Hyundai Motor Group, which also owns Kia Corp., and would be the company’s first steel mill in the U.S. When completed, it would supply the company’s two U.S. auto factories with steel sheets for the more than 600,000 vehicles they produce annually, sources said.

The company’s potential investment comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office and has threatened to impose stiff new tariffs on imports. Manufacturing its own steel, rather than importing it, could shield Hyundai from the tariffs and also save the company on shipping and logistics.

Will be north of Donaldsonville along the river.

Seems like they are trying. Haven't really seen that since Jindal's tenure.

A lot of cities wish they had the industrial base that the Baton Rouge-New Orleans area has. An abundance of cheap natural gas, deep water access, and available land goes a long way.

Surprised they are getting the cane farmers to sell anything.

Any idea how much natural gas a steel mill consumes per day?

Why do you think that Formosa will be approved ? Why to do think the Taiwanese will go forward after spending millions on lawsuits before breaking ground ? St James Parish and Ascension are two completely different industrial climates. There is a reason industrial development will occur both north and south of Donaldsonville. The politicians and poor WANT it in Ascension. In St James the poor don’t want it. A handful of community activists get money to tie it up in BS litigation and their “constituents” remain out of work and poor.

Meanwhile, in Seoul a mid level Hyundai executive excitedly tells his wife he’s in contention for a big job overseas in a little village in America that is so impressive that it’s been named after Donald Trump.

It will be a little sad not seeing a lot of these cane fields anymore. The good ole days are long behind us.

The lawsuit spending is sunk cost. The overall project economics moving forward are the question. I imagine they’ll have to re-evaluate all of it, considering how much construction costs have changed since 2018-2019.

This is great. I’m hopeful they’ll take advantage of the fact they’re located relatively close to some of the world’s best quality met coal mined in Alabama.

True, but the reality is that our cane output is up with less labor input. That trend will increase as technology and productivity in agriculture improve. It's great for farmers and our GDP, but it's not great for the local job market.

We need to diversify and support investment from industries that are still somewhat labor intensive if we can. Hopefully we can do that without disrupting too much of our agricultural output.

I'd like to see some more white collar jobs, but we need these industrial projects too.
