I’ve followed the threads through fall and it sounds like we have the infield locked in with the exception of catcher.

For the group that has followed the team closely, how do y’all think OF looks opening night? We have a ton of talent and experience out there, it’ll be interesting to see how it’s managed.

How they want to use Josh Pearson is going to be something to watch. I think they have developed better options, but will they give him the senior nod?

Judging from some of the scrimmages, it seems like something they are playing with frequently is:

LF Curiel
CF Stanfield
RF Larson
DH Jake Brown

They obviously have enough LHH to develop a platoon, but they are lacking RHH to counter that once again this season. -Stanfield / Frey (who has played LF mainly). And I think they'd rather not play Frey in the field at all, tbh.

LHH that have played OF this fall:

Curiel LF, CF
Larson RF, LF
Pearson RF, LF
Jake Brown RF
Beck CF, RF
Paul CF, LF
Costello RF

I still don't have a good sense of who starts opening night.

Does Johnson reward Pearson for being a senior? Does Johnson start Stanfield (he didn't come here to sit)? Does he slide Frey over to RF to get reps? Does Curiel do enough in spring practice to warrant an opening day spot (he's obviously one of the best gloves on this team)? Brown and Larson seem like obvious plug and play guys in OF or DH.

There's not any first team All Americans here but I don't remember an outfield with this much depth 1-6 in quite some time (without counting on guys such as Paul/Costello/Beck who could push starters).

Not many homeruns between these guys. Lack of power

There is definitely better talent than Pierson but he’s got so much experience that I think he somehow finds away to carve out a starting spot for himself over one of those young guys.

I'll go Pearson Stanfield Brown day one
Feel as if Curiel breaks in full time in April.

I’ll take the CF who has hit Sec pitching over somebody who hasn’t all day.

Keep in mind Curiel and Stanfiled might be the two weakest bats out of all the potential starters and they both hit one over the fence in the fall.

I'm thinking LF Brown, CF Stanfield and RF Larson to start but Curiel isn't far off. Curiel actually outplayed Stanfield in the fall but that's no knock on Stanfield who looked good. Curiel is very baseball savy from what I can see. He seems to have instincts that even some upperclassmen don't possess. Curial will get plenty of playing time this year.

Brown looked really good hitting this fall and could be one of the drivers on offense. His speed seems better suited on the field than DH. Right now I think our primary DH option comes from one of our catchers but Larson could be a left handed option on occasion.

Brown will not DH. He is too athletic and fast not to be in the field.

I'd assume that's just to get Larson reps out there. I think everyone would rather have Browns defense out there

In both games where LSU has ran out the "1st team" vs Samford and ULL, Brown has DH'ed. Everyone is free to read into that as much or little as they want. The spring is usually more true to early season lineups

After that misplay to end the season he probaly doesn't see the field again. Too risky

That may have been just to get a look at others in the field, while still giving Brown some ABs.

I really think he will do like last year up until conference play and rotate about 4 to 5 of them where they all get a lot of reps in the field and at the plate and sit like every 4th or 5th game and then settles into 3 or 4 of them once conference play starts

Larson started like 3x as many games in the OF last year vs Brown. You would think brown would need the reps since when we last saw him in the Chapel Hill Super

pretty much every prediction should come with a huge caveat of “if they keep playing like they did this fall”

It shouldnt have to be said Sammy. In fall you fight for position for spring. In spring you fight for position for the real deal.

I really hate Pearson maybe the odd man out on this deal. He has been clutch over the years lots of swing and miss he hasn’t been able to fix either. I know he will be given chances to snag a spot or maybe use him in dh position when you have a righty on the mound. Just seems he has had some major clutch moments over the years maybe just one of my favorites based off this new era of transfer portal craziness when you have a guy stick around 3/4/5 years kinda gravitate towards those kids. Just my opinion anyway.
