I understand that it’s a tough job and you get desensitized, but is it too much to ask for some professionalism 5 feet from where a family is sitting over their dying relative? These kids have watched too much Grey’s Anatomy and think the ICU is just a big group hangout. Just thinking back to my memories of my Grandpa dying and hearing the nurses watching TikTok and talking about their Friday plans. Is it too much to wait for the break room?

Talk with the ICU charge nurse or some other higher up about it.

It’s hard enough to find quality people in just about all industries.

Ain’t much gonna happen

That’s why they are comfortable with laughing

If it's Oschner, definitely talk to a supervisor. They don't play around there. I had something similar happen and they removed the nurse from the floor and she got a formal reprimand in her file.

This should be any job, right?

I don’t want to hear your clubbing plans when I’m trying to order my happy meal.

Not sure where you were at, but over the past 1.5 yrs, I’ve spent way too much time in various hospitals with aging parents.
Every nurse I’ve encountered is angelic.
Was even invited to one’s wedding after spending like 2 weeks straight with them.
Takes a special person to be a nurse.

Especially nursing.

Used to be only the more experienced nurses got ICU positions. It's been a coveted area because the ratio is either 1:1 or 1:2 in most places.

On the floor its like a 1:5 or 1:6 ratio (nurse per patient).

Now you have new grads going straight to the ICU because they simply don't have enough people that want to work. Too many on contracts and leave after a few months or leaving to go to NP school or outpatient.

ETA: OP, why are you worried about what nurses are talking about and not spending time with whoever you are visiting?

Absolutely wrong.

EX: I spent yesterday in Children’s hospital. Some guy comes around pushing a cart with candy and protein bars. Very personable guy. No charge for the snacks either. He makes a second “lap” around the surgical area. This time, he sits with every family and asks how they were, and if there was anything else that could be done for them. In that second conversation I found out that he is the president.

EX: I have hired everyone from yard guys to engineers. You CAN find good people. Good fits for your culture.

Side note; I as long as that dude is running Childrens Hospital, I will be donating to them.

Were they standing outside the patient's door talking and laughing, or sitting at their desk?

OP said 5’ so that means in the room or he’s being hyperbolic which loses credibility

My guess is, he heard people at the desk

If they are within the nurses station then you need to simmer down.
You are in a high stress situation with a family member passing and looking to place blame somewhere.

Don’t overlook the fact that he otherwise received great care; which is what is really important.
Them having a conversation is simply them being human. Remember, they just lost a patient, they are allowed to cope also.

Yards or feet, the point I’m making is that it was obnoxious. I’m not making some point about all nurses or all hospitals. I had a bad experience with a particular set of nurses being unprofessional. I don’t get why I’m getting so many downvotes for that.

People downvote for no reason other than to downvote around here. Don’t even waste your time trying to decipher what some on this board consider to be downvote worthy.

That’s very sad. Having to take my wife off the vent was an awful event, but the ICU where we were at they were very professional and caring. I guess we were fortunate.
