I hate playing the 300+ rated teams but if you play like LSU did yesterday, and how they played against Stetson these games can really help in all the computer rankings/metrics.

We start conference play with four winnable games. Vandy at home, Mizzou and Ole Miss on the road, then Arkansas at home.

We have a gauntlet coming up. It’s all ‘moot’ at this point.

Not really. Winning out of conference games means more than ever considering how good the SEC is this year

3-1 is possible in this stretch I think…

LSU did what they needed to do with these last 3 games. Yes MV was terrible. Maybe the worst team I've ever seen at LSU but they were focused and played 40 minutes regardless of the score,. That's what i wanted to see. How focused would they be against a team they knew they were going to destroy. Loved seeing Collins taking that 10 footer from the free throw area. It is a shot he needs to work on as it will open up the lane when he gets the ball and VM with the mid range is a throwback. That is a skill that is badly needed in todays game. If he continues to improve his 3 point shooting he will be unstoppable.

That’s semi surprising, LSU also moved up 3 spots in Kenpom from 60 to 57.

Usually you win games against teams like that and fall spots.

The movement was a result of LSU being incredibly efficient on both ends of the floor. First and foremost LSU only had 6 turnovers. They should throw a party for that in and of itself because McMahon's teams RARELY have less than 11+ in any game. Combine that with the fact LSU shot 66% on 70 FGA and that is probably about as efficient as you can hope for offensively.

On defense they held MVSU to 33% shooting. That itself is really good. But when combined with forcing 15 turnovers AND, most importantly, only committing 9 fouls all game (resulting in 4 FT attempts), that makes it a very efficient defensive effort. Obviously, the efficiencies are weighted for the opponent, and MVSU is the worst, but LSU played a pretty "clean" game. That factored into the rise in the predictive data...which factored into the rise in the NET.

The efficiency metrics don't really focus a ton on wins/losses, or even margin of victory. It's how clean you play with more credit given for doing so against better opponents. I've said it multiple times, but LSU (at least last year, and so for this year) generally hasn't been a poor shooting team in terms of FG%. They are in the top 50 in FG% right now (9th in SEC). It's the insane amount of turnovers they always have that kills their efficiency numbers, which in turn factors into the NET.

Perhaps it is just coincidental, but it's amazing how well you can play when you made a solid % of your shots AND don't turn the ball over 15 times a game.

______________

I infer that you think this is an easy conference start. Nothing will be easy in conference this year. I think this year's team looks much better than anything we have had here in a few seasons, and we might end up at .500 in conference play. Our guard play is better than is has been in a while, but our bigs will have their hands full in conference play. And I love watching both Chest and Collins play, but am in a wait and see mode on how they match up to the beasts they will run up against.

There is not a "bad" team in the SEC (thus far). Just kind of a hierarchy of good teams. If you are looking at just the predictive data (which is what oddsmakers look at to set lines/odds), Vandy and Missouri (along with LSU and South Carolina) would be the bottom 4 teams in the league right now. So I guess in those terms a home game vs. Vandy and road game vs. Missouri are about as "winnable" of games as one could get...with neither one being a "sure thing" by any means whatsoever. There are no sure things in the SEC right now.

Correction:

Not much to take from last night other than it's good to see us squash the teams we're supposed to squash instead of squeaking one out and taking the moral victory.

There’s not much difference between 6 through 15 in the SEC. They’ll probably all be somewhere around .500 in conference play.

Prior history under McMahon indicates they're loseable as well

So all the bitching about NET rankings affecting LSU negatively was bs. Checks out for the regular negative Nancy's on this board.

Are you taking a victory lap or something right now?

It’s 7 spots in the NET prior to the New Year and SEC play. We’ll all take it, but JFC dude.

Everyone was crying over how we would fall in the NET. So yeah, you crybabies took an L on this one.

I said from the beginning that nothing really matters outside of SEC play this year.

Thats an extremely tall ask for this team to navigate this SEC at 9-9 on the season.

Without Ward or Reed it's going to be extremely difficult. This is the best the SEC has ever been more than likely and I wouldnt call this one of our best teams in the last decade or so. Probably just behind the 3 Wade teams that made the tourney (and in much easier SECs).

Not trying to be a pessimist, just trying to be realistic with what we have and the schedule ahead. I see this team between 5-7 SEC wins ultimately. Just a lot to ask of a team that effectively lost 2 starter caliber players for the season. Not having Reed or Ward for the SEC slate ahead is going to cost us some games ultimately.
