Understanding the multiple layers of H1-B visa abuse and why Musks, Viveks love them

Everyone worries about the salaries, but reality is that H1-Bs as a tool for big corporations and research institutions has multiple abuse reasons for their overuse.
1) Yes, they can pay less despite the costs for sponsoring the H1-B.
But….
2) Control of the employee and influence to work beyond reasonable hours for the same low pay is the biggest issue.
They use this as a threat once here to force ridiculous expectations in the visa holders and basically hold them hostage.
Complain? I’ll pull support for your visa and you go home. Not work hard enough? I’ll pull support for your visa and you can go home.
I have seen this throughout my career and nowhere is it bigger than the tech industry and academia. Professors literally only taking international students for their labs and then working them to the bone.
Can’t threaten American students or residents with the threat of losing your right to be in the US. Americans have more rights, more supports (unemployment, insurance protection, etc). Internationals don’t have these and again are held hostage.
It is real and why the H1-B visa system should be extremely limited and require equivalent salaries to American employees and possibly even require elimination of exempt status for salaried employees thus forcing them to be paid overtime.

Thank you we definitely needed another thread on this

These are the ones who I feel bad for because they’re smart as shite and treated exactly how you said. They’re always quiet, kind, top students and some professor who never left the classroom will steal their work to publish something to get their arse kissed at a conference.

Your headline is totally false

Yeah the headline doesn’t match the subject. The 2 points are accurate though.

Please disintegrate yourself…

Scott Adams opposes H1B as long as DEI lives.
He is willing to talk about a sane, meritorious, H1B but only on the condition that DEI is outlawed.

The part of Musks and Viveks love them is what I was referring to. It's just wrong.

The hatred of white males in tech companies is noticeable.
It's partially the fault of the white males that run the companies, they are so interested in being cool and promoting their friends that they let other white males be the scapegoats.

No it isn’t. These companies want people they can put their thumbs down and get them to put in more work for less.
That level of control is clear in both of their setups. It’s okay to admit your heroes aren’t perfect.
They both abused H1-B, so please stop saying it doesn’t apply to them.

I have dealt with this in many instances. Suppression of salaries in both tech industries and research institutes. It happens and plenty of examples, but you refuse to admit your golden boys can do any wrong.
I have had colleagues offered less money (significant) because they were international and it in no way covered the difference in sponsorship costs.
Also, I explained how they can control employees through indirect threat to their status. It’s not that hard and exists in every company. You all want to claim their excuse that Americans lack the work ethic is true, yet ignore the use of control over status for these international workers as basically a whip to get them to do more for less does not exist.
I have seen multiple employees state that they had no option but to work 60 hours per work because if they didn’t, their bosses threatened to fire them.
I see this nearly every day in academia and with colleagues in the tech industry.
My parents had H1-B visas many decades ago. I believe they are great when not abused to help this country grow and provide great skilled workers in areas we lack.
This is not how it is used now in both the technology industries or academic institutions.

Agreed, H1-B visa is essentially modernized slavery. Sure no one is forcing them to do it, so we don't cry "human rights violations", but it's really not much better.
At the end of the day, the worse an employer can threaten most of us with is our jobs. Unless it's a depression type economy, for most of us that isn't a huge threat. Yes losing a job and finding another one are a royal pain, so most of us try to avoid it, but we can do it.
For these H1-B visa holders, they can threaten their very way of life. Visa pulled, these people have to leave the country. They can't find other work as they won't have the employment authorization or visa to get another job. If the H1-B visa holder comes from a truly terrible country where violence and death could occur, the idea of going back to that could truly be looked at like a death sentence.
It's not hard to see why employers love H1-B visa employees. They can be paid less, worked longer hours (with sometimes no overtime) and just be treated terrible, because what are they going to do about it?
Musk and Vivek are wrong on this issue. White Americans built the greatest country in the history of the world. Sure maybe some white americans are lazy, but that could be said of any minority as well. The vast majority of White Americans of working age are not lazy.
I don't see Musk in particular lasting long with Trump. Trump is going to have to remind Musk that he, not Musk, is President and that Musk is only there in an advisory capacity. Trump might have to ask Musk not to go rogue like he didn't on this topic, which I'm not sure Musk can do. And honestly, I think once Musk realizes he truly is an advisor and doesn't have any real unilateral power, he'll leave on his own. Musk is used to always having power and I don't see him being able to handle not having any legitimate power.

Companies want cheap labor, just like everyone on this board does.
Everyone on this board has no damn issue with hiring a crew of illegals to do your landscaping. Why? Because they're cheaper than American labor and they "work harder".
Most people love that they can buy their fruit and vegetables cheaper, their plastic bullshite goods cheaper, etc. Everyone shops at Walmart or Amazon instead of your local American owned stores and small producers.
The masses are participating in the same outsourcing of labor that the corporations do. You just don't care unless it's your livelihood that's in jeopardy.

And this is a bad thing to care about your livelihood?

No. It's human nature.
You're just now realizing the scope and the real world consequences. When you've been watching it happen for decades.
Just like you look put for your own interests and pay less for Chinese goods, the corporations are just doing the same.

Agreed, H1B should be for hiring hard to find skillsets, or skillsets where all the top applicants get snapped up by the FAANGS, and there just aren't enough to hire for normal industry.

This is obvious now. Thank him for his service and tell him we will stay in Touch. The shite he pulled does President Trump no favors and shows he is not thinking about the MAGA movement and future of the party
