Besides the typical reasons (economic opportunities, crime, taxes).

I used to live in New Orleans and I'll admit, I miss it many times. Yes I miss the community feeling, the food, the atmosphere, the festivals, all of it. I was just in New Orleans last weekend up until Christmas. Part of it tugs on me to return. In many ways it's better than a lot of Florida (where I live), that just comes off as soulless.

With that said, since I drove over to New Orleans, one big thing I don't miss is how geographically isolated it is. One nice thing about Florida, cities like Orlando, Tampa, St. Pete, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and even smaller cities like St. Augustine, Bradenton and Sarasota are all within a 1 - 4 drive. They can either be a day trip, overnight trip or a weekend trip.

You can also easily do weekend trips to the Florida Keys, Savannah/Tybee Island, Hilton Head Island and Brunswick/St. Simons Island. All of them within 5 hours. Even Charleston is with 6 - 6 1/2 hours.

New Orleans is so isolated, I get why most of Louisiana do the same trips over and over. There's nothing in most of Louisiana outside of New Orleans. There's nothing in Alabama or Mississippi outside of the Gulf Coast beaches. Even in Texas, you're in east Texas and Houston and Dallas are more event towns than they are towns you do a vacation in. Memphis is pretty blah and Nashville really isn't that close.

I love New Orleans and that whole Gulf South region, but I don't miss the geographic isolation.

Any of you feel the same way? Any other weird things that keep you from going back to New Orleans or Louisiana?

Fertita is already on record of saying he wants to buy them and would agree and wants to keep in Nola, but nice try with the same shite being said on repeat for about 40 years. Chicken Littles….

I guess if you keep saying it for another 40, you might get it right once.

As long as we keep the Saints I genuinely could care less about the Pelicans. I definitely see them leaving at some point and that's okay. Smoothie King Center is probably the worst arena in the league currently and with the state rightly focusing on the Superdome, I can't imagine there is much money left over to build a new arena or do major renovations.

It's ironic that the NBA is the last league to get to Vegas. 10 years ago I would've had the NBA being the first or second (just behind the NHL but before the NFL and MLB) league to get a team in Vegas. Definitely wouldn't shock if the Pelicans were one of the teams that eventually gets considered to move to Vegas.

The Bucs will have won the South now for 5 years straight. They have more division titles than the Saints and 2 Lombardis.

They are much better run organization today with a continued bright future with very solid ownership.

Sell the team.

Wrong. The Bucs, if they win on Sunday, would have won the NFC South from 2021-2024, 4 straight, not 5 straight. That also means the Saints and Bucs would be tied at 7 division titles.

The Bucs are just lucky to be in a terrible division. The Bucs were nothing from 1976 - 1998 and 2006 - 2019. They've literally only had two stretches of success, from 1999 - 2005 (and even in that stretch 2001, 2003 and 2004 weren't anything great) and 2020 - now (and again last year and this year they aren't a great team).

It took them buying Brady to get their second Lombardi Trophy. They are downright lucky to have two considering that franchise has failed for most of its existence.

Even if they do win the division this year they'll do nothing in the Playoffs just like they have the last few years. Even in their current stretch of division titles from 2021 until now, if the Bucs are so great, how come they haven't even made the NFC Championship Game?

I don't debate that the Saints are a mess of an organization right now, they are. But the Bucs aren't a great organization. They definitely aren't anywhere near the level of the Chiefs, Eagles, Lions, Vikings, Bills or Ravens. They are just taking advantage of a bad division.
quote:

I hate the dirty birds but my hatred towards the buccaneers has intensified tenfold ever since the Jared Cook fumble game and Tom Brady won them that Mickey Mouse Super Bowl. They are the most undeserving franchise to have two lombardis and I want to ruin their season. I’m tired of them sneaking into the playoffs.

Living in Florida I agree. I dislike the Bucs more than the Falcons at this point. Bucs fans like to pretend that 2006 - 2019 just never happened and that getting lucky and winning the terrible the NFC South the last couple of years somehow negates that the Bucs have overall been a terrible franchise.

The Bucs have been such a lucky franchise. They've been around since 1976 and have only been even remotely good from 1999-2005 and from 2020-Now. Outside of those two periods they have been a terrible franchise. The fact they lucked into two Super Bowl Titles is honestly pathetic.

They got lucky last year even though we were better than the Bucs by the end of the year. Their fan base is such an arrogant white trash bandwagon fan base. Most will try to act like they've always supported the Bucs when the reality is probably half their current fan base never attended a Bucs game pre-Brady.

Never mind that if the Bucs win the division this year, they tie the Saints for division titles at 7. The Falcons only have 4 so they are well behind us. So screw the Bucs, I know we have next to no chance to beat them but somehow I hope we do on Sunday and ruin their season.
Being from West Virginia originally, I either go back up to West Virginia or I stick to North Carolina and the Boone/Blowing Rock/Blue Ridge Parkway/Asheville area. I know this year that's not doable since a lot of North Carolina is still recovering from Helene. I enjoy the Smokies but stay on the NC side (though I haven't been to the Smokies in several years). No desire to really ever see Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge ever again.

Years ago I understood the appeal of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. It was affordable, especially if you were in the south and could drive. But now it's just beyond trashy and it's not even cheap anymore. I'm sure most of you all are paying $200-$300/night now just to be at a hotel and look at traffic. It's the antithesis of what the area should be.
I think we all agree that as long as the money comes in Gayle doesn't really care. To me the only way to get Gayle to shake things up is to make life uncomfortable for her.

Gayle needs to become a pariah in New Orleans. Not welcomed at restaurants. Booed when she is out in public. Not invited to social gatherings and kicked out of the high society circles in New Orleans. Not invited to any Mardi Gras events. Nothing out of line, but to people like Gayle they have to be a socialite. They have to be loved. They love their social life and status. That socialite status need to be threatened.

As long as her socialite status isn't threatened, nothing will change. If her socialite status is threatened, then she'll freak out and make changes.
quote:

Can’t threaten American students or residents with the threat of losing your right to be in the US. Americans have more rights, more supports (unemployment, insurance protection, etc). Internationals don’t have these and again are held hostage.
It is real and why the H1-B visa system should be extremely limited and require equivalent salaries to American employees and possibly even require elimination of exempt status for salaried employees thus forcing them to be paid overtime.

Agreed, H1-B visa is essentially modernized slavery. Sure no one is forcing them to do it, so we don't cry "human rights violations", but it's really not much better.

At the end of the day, the worse an employer can threaten most of us with is our jobs. Unless it's a depression type economy, for most of us that isn't a huge threat. Yes losing a job and finding another one are a royal pain, so most of us try to avoid it, but we can do it.

For these H1-B visa holders, they can threaten their very way of life. Visa pulled, these people have to leave the country. They can't find other work as they won't have the employment authorization or visa to get another job. If the H1-B visa holder comes from a truly terrible country where violence and death could occur, the idea of going back to that could truly be looked at like a death sentence.

It's not hard to see why employers love H1-B visa employees. They can be paid less, worked longer hours (with sometimes no overtime) and just be treated terrible, because what are they going to do about it?

Musk and Vivek are wrong on this issue. White Americans built the greatest country in the history of the world. Sure maybe some white americans are lazy, but that could be said of any minority as well. The vast majority of White Americans of working age are not lazy.

I don't see Musk in particular lasting long with Trump. Trump is going to have to remind Musk that he, not Musk, is President and that Musk is only there in an advisory capacity. Trump might have to ask Musk not to go rogue like he didn't on this topic, which I'm not sure Musk can do. And honestly, I think once Musk realizes he truly is an advisor and doesn't have any real unilateral power, he'll leave on his own. Musk is used to always having power and I don't see him being able to handle not having any legitimate power.

Here's how the CFP and Bowl Games can Co-Exist:

16 team CFP
1st Round and 2nd Round Games on Campus.
Semi-Finals at 2 of the big bowl games as neutral games (previously the New Year's Six bowl games - same as now).
National Championship Game at a Neutral Site (same as now).

Bowl Games
The 4 big bowl games (previously the New Year's Six bowl games) not being used for the CFP Semi-Finals, use the teams who lose in the 1st and 2nd Round Campus Games.

To do this and make it fair, push the start of the college football season up by one week to start the week before Labor Day weekend. Then move up the Conference Championship Games to Thanksgiving Weekend. Regular Season wraps up weekend before Thanksgiving Weekend.

As a template, we'll use 2024:
Saturday, November 30th - Conference Championship Weekend and CFP Selection Weekend
Friday, December 13th/Saturday, December 14th - 1st Round CFP Games on Campus.
Friday, December 20th/Saturday, December 21st - 2nd Round CFP Games on Campus.
Saturday, January 4th - CFP Semi-Finals
Monday, January 20th - CFP National Championship

This format would allow a 2 week break before the beginning of the CFP and a 2 week break between the 2nd Round and Semi-Finals and the Semi-Finals and National Championship Game.

The teams who lose in the CFP 1st and 2nd Round then get selected into the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and the two other big bowls. The Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl and Orange Bowl would rotate between being regular bowls and being the CFP Semi-Finals.

So again, using this year, the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl would be the CFP Semi-Finals. The regular big bowls would be the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

Doing this helps make the CFP better and helps to save the Bowl Games. This also allows teams who make the CFP but lose in the 1st and 2nd Rounds to still have the more traditional bowl experience and allows those teams and their fans the ability to go to a big bowl game.
Something I thought about before this season even began, how 4 of the CFP Teams will not even have the opportunity to have a traditional bowl experience.

I know the bowls are largely irrelevant, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun. I know many here will say "the players are paid, we don't care", and I agree. It's not about just the players being paid though, it's about denying players who aren't going pro, fans, students, cheerleaders, even the band, a reward for a good season.

Like many of you all, I've used bowl games before as almost a mini-vacation.

Look at Indiana. While they may not have gone to the Rose Bowl, in the very least they probably would've gone to a bowl like the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix or the Orange Bowl in Miami. Instead, their season ends in South Bend, Indiana on a snowy night in December. Not on anyone's wish list.

People say 12 teams are too much, I agree. 8 was the perfect number. I also don't like the idea of byes, to me that's too much of an advantage in college football. But they aren't going to lower the amount of teams, so really they might as well just make it 16 and be done with it.

quote:

Me and my 2 children are Vax free...pureblood to the bone.

People made sacrifices to form this country and make it dree. Fu*k all of you who bowed down to higher ups, even to keep a job, and took that poison and forced it into your child's body. You had a chance to take on tyrannical elements, and be a small.part of what true Americans are about.
Those of you who were weak, are the ones that would accept communism, just to remain comfortable.

With all due respect, actually with no respect, fu*k you. People like you are genuinely no better than those on the other side who wanted to make unvaccinated people second class citizens and get them fired from jobs.

I got the original 2 dose vax. I did not get any of the boosters. People like you act like it's purely just a moral decision. I have heriditary high blood pressure (every member of my family, even my mom who weighs all of 125, has it), allergies (pollen and animal dander) and asthma (mostly caused by the allergies).

Back in 2021 I actually got the vax early, in April, because I was concerned I could be one of the people who has a bad reaction to Covid and end up in the hospital. My doctor agreed. My decision (and I'm sure many others) had nothing to do with "getting in line", "bowing to the government" or even "for our jobs". It was truly a medical decision between my doctor and myself.

If I know what I know now, would I get the vax, probably not. I didn't get any of the boosters, just the original 2 dose series. Both my doctor and I decided against the boosters since it was obvious the Covid vax wasn't a vax at all and was barely effective.

With that said, do I regret my decision to get the vax? Absolutely NOT. I made the correct decision given my medical history and a discussion with my doctor.

If I didn't have my medical conditions, I absolutely would not have gotten it and I would've gotten an exemption to keep my job. But sc*ew you, acting like we did it just to satisfy the government, or family, or to keep our job. Many of us did it truly for medical reasons.

And just so many of you know, calling yourself a "pureblood" is laughable at best. Unless you've never had any vaccine (including as a kid), never smoked, never done hard drugs (especially the ones you inject yourself with), never done alcohol, never had a blood transfusion and never had any type of injury that caused a wound, you are not a pureblood in any way. Heck most here on this board probably weight 250-300, are on diabetes medications and have terrible dietary habits. You are no pureblood.

And just to remind you all, the terminology "pureblood" was used by Nazi's. I am Conservative but I would prefer us not falling into a liberal trap. Let's make them look stupid for calling MAGA and Conservatives "Nazi's", let's not do things that justify their hatred.

Even in movies, look at Harry Potter. The "purebloods" weren't the good guys. Whether it's in real life with Nazi's or even in movies like Harry Potter, the people calling themselves "purebloods" are never the good guys.

I was personally going on trips, including hiking trips up in West Virginia and North Carolina in May 2020 when people like you were probably still in lockdown. Heck I spent Memorial Day 2020 at Hilton Head Island and went to several restaurants with no real distancing restrictions and no mask restrictions. Can you say the same ChatGPT of LA?

Many people got the vax because they had a family to worry about. Many people, like myself, got the vax because we have health conditions that could have made Covid bad for us. I ended up getting Covid in June 2021 and December 2022. Honestly for me, it wasn't anything, but when I got the vax in 2021 I didn't know that. As someone who spent 2 1/2 days in a hospital for Strep Pneumonia in 2018, including 12 hours in the ICU, I never wish to relive that experience again.

So stop with the false machoism. Honestly, many of you here are the ones who are weak, criticizing anyone who got the vax. I don't believe many of you here. I would bet good money that at least 25% of you all on here who are saying they are "pureblood" got the vax.

I got the original vax. It wasn't to support the government. It wasn't to cave in to family pressure. It wasn't to save my job. It was purely a medical decision and for many it was.

Be better than the other side, because right now many of you are no better than the people who shut the U.S. down and wanted to make unvaccinated second class citizens. I never supported any vax mandate, but I'm not going to criticize someone for doing what they thought was best for them and their family and getting the vax, especially back in 2021.

You need to bet the next game in order to get your money back.

Still ahead slightly thank you very much. I put more money on Penn State to win and also on Notre Dane to win last night.

I knew this was the gane I shouldn’t have touched. It was the game I felt the least confident in.

It just means I now need Tennessee to win or cover. If Clemson had scored one more point I would’ve ended up ahead regardless of the Tennessee-Ohio State game.
Thanks Clemson for screwing me. All
I needed was 1 point. Line was 13.5, Texas going to win by 14. Unbelievable.
Just need Clemson to win or keep it within 13 1/2 points to cover. Could care less about Texas, they aren’t true SEC anyway.

Park at your friends place?

They just moved back to the city so they are renting currently. They are only given 2 spots and there isn’t any street parking. Once they buy then I can but not for this trip.

Park at Harrahs gamble for 30 minutes per day. Secure easy parking in a great location.

I was thinking this was still going to be the best option. Has there been any issues with car break-ins at the Harrah's lot? No way would I trust any of the generic FQ and CBD lots as I know car break-ins are common.

Obviously I know to not have any valuables visible and it's not a new car so I don't think it would attract much attention. Glad to hear Harrah's still does the free 24 hours for 30 minutes per day.
NBA above all other professional league is a players first league. People follow players more than the teams.

No Jordan, Thomas, Magic, Bird, Kobe or Shaq superstars anymore. And LeBron is a shell of his former self.

Plus the NBA above all other leagues went all in with the Black Lives Matter stuff. Even before that I would really only watch some of the playoffs and the NBA Finals. Nowadays I don't even bother with the playoffs, maybe I'll watch a little bit of the NBA Finals but that's it. No real interest in the NBA at all.
Debating on putting this here or the Travel board, thought here would be better. I'll be in New Orleans Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for Christmas and to visit some friends.

It's kind of a last minute thing so flying is out of the question. It would be $350 each way to fly. Plus driving will let me spend Saturday over on the MS Gulf Coast where I partially grew up.

But parking is just ridiculous now. The hotel I'm staying at wants $42 plus tax a night for Valet parking. No Self parking option.

Years ago I would park at the economy lot at the airport and take the Airport Shuttle in but that doesn't exist anymore. I would have to pay for a taxi or lyft/uber which would defeat the purpose.

I know I've parked at Harrah's a few trips and gotten the free parking for gambling for 30 minutes. Always felt a little uneasy leaving my car there for so long but it always worked out.

Does Harrah's still do that and is it the still the best bet to avoid paying crazy rates for parking? Any other recommendations? Or just accept it and pay the crazy valet rate at the hotel?

One of the Countries in the world I have no desire to see.

I love traveling and will travel almost anywhere but I agree. To me the whole region of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Mount Everest I just have no interest in. I enjoy hiking but even with Everest it's overrated, too commercialized and has been thoroughly trashed. Not worth the money from what I've seen.

The fact that India thinks they need to grow quicker tells me how they view human life. That country needs a population decrease, not even more people.
Everyone says that but it's not really valid. Knoxville, TN isn't exactly in a tropical climate. Their game against Vandy was cold.

And here's what everyone forgets. A lot of the Ohio State players are not from the midwest. Some are from the south and they aren't exactly used to playing in cold weather either.

The cold weather might be a slight advantage to Ohio State but I don't think it'll be by much.

If it was Florida, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M then I would say yes, significant advantage Ohio State. But definitely not against Tennessee.
quote:

He should split it down the middle. Make the world adjust to the US time being 30 minutes different from the rest of the world.

It really wouldn't even be a big deal. I would definitely be fine with just splitting it down the middle, doing 30 minutes and making it permanent. Stays light longer than being truly on Standard Time. Gets light earlier than being truly on DST.
quote:

Y'all really want the sun to rise at 5 AM in july?

Better than the sun rising at 9 a.m. in December. Heck my parents live in Kentucky right near where it changes from Eastern Time to Central Time. They are in Eastern Time and before it changes from DST to Standard Time it gets light barely before 9 a.m.

If we had permanent DST come December they wouldn't get light easily until 9:30 a.m. That absolute s*cks.

Sorry but there isn't much worse than having to wake up in darkness to go to work, workout or even run a few errands. I know for me when it gets light earlier I can wake up naturally. When it gets light later I have to set my phone and that just stinks.

How did all of humanity survive with DST until the last 80 years? How do countries that don't have DST survive?

I honestly don't care which way you do it. DST or Standard Time, make one permanent. But they tried permanent DST before and it was an absolute failure. Parents were freaking out having their kids going to school is pitch darkness (which is ironic since it now happens anyway). So I say go back to standard time or split it and do 30 minutes.
