BR Private Schools vs Ascension Parish

What are everyone’s thoughts on the top private k-12 schools (Dunham, Episcopal) vs ascension parish public schools?
Take money out of it for the sake of this discussion…just consider education quality, college prep, peer groups, etc…

As you know from here, how a kid does academically is up to the parents not the location of the school. Are you up to it?

Yep I agree, can’t argue with that

Episcopal and Dunham are great schools. Pick the one closest to your life.

We have a friend who moved their daughter to Ascension Christian a few years ago and has been very pleased. Just another one to toss in the discussion.

Do you think Episcopal/Dunham would lead to better academic outcomes, assuming solid parental involvement, then ascension parish public?

This thread will be filled with private school nerds shitting on public schools
AP schools are a great option. We moved our kids out of catholic schools and into the St Amant district. We have been very happy with our decision and live in a much nicer home within a crime-free neighborhood

Kind of hard to not take the money out of it. What's the cost of k-12 for dunham? $100-$120k just for tuition? Add in fundraisers, etc and you're in for some serious cash. The reason I note this is how would you feel if you dumped $120,000 into your child's k-12 education only for them to go to college for a general studies degree? Or not even go to college?
Or, you could send them to Ascension schools, sign them up for AP and honors classes, put aside half the Dunham tuition, and give them a financial boost when they go to college?
I don't know about the private schools, but the AP schools partner with BROC, OLOL, and other programs to give the students an insight to healthcare careers before applying for college.
Also, AP schools are tied to RPCC and some students take college courses while still in HS and advance faster through college.
Just some food for thought. The main thing is these are your kids and you have to do what you think is best for them

I guess on the money standpoint, assume they were given full tuition assistance….does that change your stance?

I mean if you’re taking money out of this, then no public school can compete with what you’d get academically out of a top BR private school.

Over Christmas, I was speaking with my aunt who just left a private BR high school and moved to Prairieville High for better pay and benefits.
She said it's completely awful. Terrible kids. Tons of cheating. Tons of pressure from admin not to make a stink over anything. Just keep failing kids moving along until they graduate..
However I have a cousin who's kids went thru Dutchtown and they did great there. Smart kids. College bound.
So who knows?

Ummmm... Dunham HS and Episcopal HS are between $24-30k per year.
And no, my kids don't go there. Catholic schools are already pricey enough.

I got a great education at St. Amant, played sports, made friends, qualified for Honors Tops and got paid to go to LSU.
My kids will go to Catholic and go to St. Jude currently. Couldn’t be any happier with St. Jude.
Like someone else said, it really just comes down to the parents and the kid. I’ve known plenty of shitheads to come out of both Catholic and StA. There’s definitely no guarantees.

My son was at Shenandoah Elementary though 4th grade, then we moved to Ascension due to the whole delay w/ St. George. He went to Bouillon Elementary the first year it was opened, which was a good school. Then he went to Bluff Middle when it first opened, and the first year it was good. Then the principal left to go to Dutchtown and his 8th grade year was horrible. A lot of shady stuff going on. Now he's at Dutchtown and I'll just say there is a shite ton of stuff that happens that is swept under the rug and never gets out - overdoses, etc. not to mention a lot of drug use and spoiled kids who are rotten to the core and have no concept of being responsible for their actions. Personally I'd say private is the way to go.

I have a senior at Episcopal and have a friend who is a teacher at Dutchtown. There is no comparison if money is no issue and tuition is right under 25K

We could find pos and neg all day about each.
My opinion from talking to other parents is smaller private schools can be so cliqueish that your kid can be outcast for years. Then there's the flip side where it is truly like a family if you're in that circle.
AP schools will have plenty of students with similar backgrounds so the odds of a student finding their way into a circle of friends is highly probable. A definite con is there will be some trash students who lack home training.
In the end, I believe private schools do better to prepare/ work towards preparing the individual for success in an individual way such as how to conduct yourself in the presence of authority figures, being self assertive, manners, how to speak to an audience, etc.
