Pasture land is worth a heck of a lot more than timberland around here. Can't even find anyone to do a thinning these days. No money in the timber.

What turn around are you looking for, meaning years?

Might be more profitable to plant in hardwood in the long run.

I’ve heard previously it was around 200/acre but not sure. Interested in any responses as I’m about to clearcut some timber and want to replant.

If you’re planting trees plant walnut. That yields most but takes awhile to grow. Yea pine grows faster. You’d have to talk to mill about advice

If you plant long leaf, the NRCS will pay for it.

Jasper Mac is correct on price and trees per acre. About $125 for 605-622. Yes that’s for labor and seedlings. If you have enough ground to get it done at economy of scale

Me personally I’d plant hardwoods if it’s a place you hunt. I guess it really depends on your plans and how many acres.

Is that what they call “super pines”?
Damn things grow about 2 ft/yr when young.

Look into having it machine planted and insist that they run a subsoiler/ripper ahead of the planter.

If it’s had cattle on it the compaction will really hurt seedling survival unless that hard pan is fractured.

Doesn't really matter.

Don't want to keep up with 100 acres of pasture. Figured plant half with pines and grandkids 35 years from now could have something if they need it. Never thought of planting hardwood.

We hunt and ride horses o it. Just want more wooded area so I don't have to clip 100 acres twice a year.

I like your thought process thinking long term but in reality unless something changes, you are going to end up burdening your grandkids with 100 acres of row planted pines. They will need to be thinned at about 17 years and with the way prices are right now and that little of acreage you may not make any money or even be able to find someone to cut it at all

Think about planting whatever hardwoods were native to that area Get with your local NRCS office and they may be able to provide some cost share for the site prep and planting and recommend some native species

For the record, I hate pine plantations

NRCS will pay you to plant just about any native trees, including lob plantations...which is dumb as hell.
