Obscure artists you did not discover until after they disbanded or died.

Not sure if Joy Division counts as obscure, but I joined that party after it was over.

NVM "obscure"
Roy Buchanan would be that for me, then.

The Specials
Fun fact, I believe Elvis Costello produced their debut album.

I was on a major major classic rock burn through the 90's and early 2000's so I didnt entertain anything else
I was late to the Chris Cornell party but that dude was amazing and I really did not listen to his music till it was almost too late

Discovered the Brit indie band “Delays” on Spotify a few years back. I thought the singer was a chick with a really raspy voice. Good songs! After looking them up I discovered that the singer was a guy with a really impressive falsetto voice. I also learned that he had just died of bowel cancer at 43

This doesn't qualify for the latter part but they are definitely obscure. Years ago I saw Built to Spill at a small venue and their opener was a band called Mothers. Never heard of them obviously. They were from Athens so that piqued my curiosity and I really dug their sound. The lead is a female with a pretty distinct voice which you probably love or hate. But I love their overall sound. Here are my faves by them:
It hurts until it doesn't
Copper Mines
Lockjaw
No crying in baseball
