To real fans and trolls….r we better off now with way next years team is being built OR was Underwood and less portal activity the better way?.?
Personally (especially with Nuss returning ) I like the TEAM building that’s happening.
Additionally I think Underwear going to Michigan ($$ not withstanding) will hurt or at least stunt his progress. WHY…same reason Rodriguez wasn’t successful when he was their coach because you have OL that’s recruited heavy for run blocking and he will be limited to 20-25 passes per game if that many because of weather etc etc. He be better if inSEC. Just my opinion so trolls can blast me if u have to lol

I'm not sure how we can say that losing Underwood led to better portal recruiting. I haven't heard anything about NIL with any of the transfers.

With that said, I think if we signed Underwood, CBK would be more invested in the 2026-2027 seasons and probably put a little less stock into this coming Fall.

I think Underwoods money went to Nuss which kept him here another year. We were going to be aggressive in the portal regardless of who we signed out of high school. We have holes that need to be filled with experienced players.

Agree.

Phillips and Stewart money was added to the portal kitty with a little extra to secure Pickett.

I don't wish him any harm, but his is full on Tiger Bait now. I could care less about his success now. I only care about Tigers.

I get what you’re saying, but I’d still take the elite QB if given the choice.

This

Also Underwood was expensive. LSU can get other pieces now. We won’t get Underwood and probably not someone as good as him, but we aren’t A&M.

Transfer portal is underrated here. Guys are too hung up in “building a class” out of high school neglecting to realize any one of them can transfer at any moment, and we’ve gotten our 2 GOAT’s from the portal. What if Underwood turned into ASU JD and transferred somewhere else to win the Heisman?

Yes they were going to tell Nuss to kick sand and bring in a TF to lead us at the QB position from the start next year, with Clemson, OM, and SC early on in the season. Sure

Losing Underwood was a good thing. Also I doubt he stays at Michigan.

If he doesn't, it means he wasn't as good as thought. I'm sure Michigan has the $$ to keep him if they want....and that is apparently all he is looking for. As his dad has said at 40 years of age....."I don't want to work anymore".

We have no clue who we would have gotten in the portal had we signed Underwood. Impossible to know.

We are definitely looking good, though

People who thought Underwood was going to account for 2-3 additional wins as a true freshman and melted when he went to Michigan were delusional.

For an immediate impact, Oklahoma did well in getting Mateer out of the portal.

We didn't have a choice of Underwood or the Portal.

Underwood made the choice--we reacted by going heavy in the portal.

The bottom line and the reality is....EVERY SINGLE ONE of the players on this team is a FA again next year.

Underwood is also a FA next year. Its what it is.

If we get Braelin Moore and Sydir Mitchell--and a Safety; this is the team we go to war with and I am good with it.

He’s probably a future portal guy. I could see him being a free agent every year to test the market. Maybe wrong but doesn’t seem to far fetched.

Since we saved a ton of money on Underwood and he will still likely have a learning curve as true freshman, I don't think there is any doubt that we will be able to field a better team in 2025 because he didn't sign. If Underwood turns out to be a good as some of his comps (Vince Young, Trevor Lawerence), that will be a much tougher question to answer for '26 and '27.

I was thinking about this a couple days ago as transfers in were stacking up. Underwood may have saved us from ourselves in keeping us from putting too many resources into one guy.

You have 44 spots in the 2 deep roster plus a couple ST specialists. It may be better to stiffen and improve the supporting cast a lot rather than throw down FU money on one QB.

The cupboard is not completely bare but 10-15 top level transfer guys probably help the team more than the one guy. This is a reversal for me that I feel you hve to have an elite QB to compete for NC.

I think it was the final straw to bring about a philosophy change in recruiting. Prior to that BK, understandably, felt the model of recruiting and developing your own players was the more sustainable model. Underwood was going to be a big part of that. So LSU invested a lot of time and resources into recruiting him for multiple years. He was LSU's guy...until a big offer at the end forced LSU to make a decision: Match the massive offer (which could cause ripple effects with recruiting/retaining guys at other positions), or let him go and "eat" all of the time/resources spent recruiting him. LSU chose the latter.

The thought after that was if that is the number it is going to cost to sign a blue chip player prospect with ZERO history of college production and ZERO guarantee he will stay at LSU for more than one season, then we may as well allocate those resources to guys with proven production at the college level.

The NFL went through this over a decade ago. High draft picks, especially QBs, were leveraging teams for huge contracts, despite having never taken an NFL snap. The teams were almost forced to pay the ransoms. Then, when the QB didn't work out, (see Jamarcus Russell, amongst others) the entire roster was screwed for years because the team didn't have the space to pay other players of need.

The mindset has become that every guy on the roster is a "one year" player. That being the case, it behooves you to get the best "one year" players you can. If those guys end up staying multiple years that is great! But you can't look that far into the future any more.
