I have an offer from a cousin named Jimmy that claims it’s possible to buy a condo in Sicily for a dollar and I’m like no way Jose - is he busting my boobs over this?

I heard about this. Yes it is true and is a legit offer. However, ask yourself why actual locals wouldn't just buy them up?

They are old, dilapidated, full of mold, etc. There's a reason they're trying to hook foreigners with a gimmick to unload them.

I think the deal with those is they give it to you but you have to commit to renovating it up to their standards. It's basically a demolished building and you have to spend to fix it up

I’ve watched a few YouTube videos about this and that’s part of the deal. There are some other catches like moving into it within 3-5 years, opening a business or getting a job in the town and having it as your domicile for so many years.

Those towns are losing population and they are trying to get residence.

Some of the renovations needed are more extensive than others. I saw one that was just a $20-30K renovation. Another had Fire and Water damage and no roof and mold and wild animals. Reno was like $150K for a small residence.

There are many YouTube videos about such purchases, and the renovation costs can be significant.

I have a family member that is renovating a house in Italy right now. You would not believe the bureaucracy and roadblocks. It makes it at least twice as expensive as it should be to do anything.

For example, they wanted to add natural stone paving walkway and area leading to their front door. They had to apply to the historical preservation office to get approval to put large cut limestone leading up to the front door. When the inspector came out, he concluded that the balcony at the master bedroom did not comply with historical requirements, and that a stone patio on the side of the house had to be redone to comply. The municipality wouldn’t approve the cut stone walking area (the plans were in compliance) until they removed or rebuilt the balcony and the patio. It’s infuriating.

Short answer, NO I would not buy a house in Sicily for a dollar.
