I think I would rather be waterboarded than taken down by a squirrel pack. Why has everything just gone nutty on the left coast? Then again, who funded the study over the past 12 years and what were they really trying to prove?

quote:

The discovery has broader implications for understanding how wildlife adapts to human-modified environments. “The fact that California ground squirrels are behaviorally flexible and can respond to changes in food availability might help them persist in environments rapidly changing due to the presence of humans,” Wild noted.

How 'bout a nut?

Squirrels have long been known to be opportunistic meat eaters in addition to their normally vegetarian diet.

Anyone who has spent anytime outside has probably seen a squirrel eat meat. They are glorified tree rats and will eat anything they can.

Of course, but this group took 12 years ultimately trying to prove it is us who is causing squirrels to "evolve"!! I have to wonder just how much time did they spend outdoors with the subjects of their study.

At Cal Berkeley the researchers will live in the trees with the squirrels.

I got hemmed up at the Bixby Bridge one time by a pack of squirrels who wanted my walnuts.

They do have an innate ability to get the angles of attack maximized extremely quickly. How quickly did you drop the walnuts?

I sat there surrounded by them and passed out the entire large bag of California walnuts I had bought at a San Fran market the previous day. A fat one, I think he was the leader, had a mouthful of nuts, one in his left hand and was reaching for another with the other hand. It took about 45 seconds to empty the bag and then they all scattered back under the rocks.

I was fishing one time beneath a bridge on the Cimarron and there was a squirrel munching on a freshly hit possum that had been apparently struck by a vehicle and thrown over the side onto a sandbar. This Harrier Hawk flew down like lightning and smoked the little bastard. It was pretty bad arse.

Can you even imagine our lives when the squirrels activate their Air Force?

My cats keep catching flying squirrels. Like every other night they have one. Makes me think there must be a hoard of them

Cats know how formidable a squirrel "air force" can be and are adept at removing the "fliers". By doing so, the rodent population of mice, rats, voles, and moles remains healthy, which will offer sustainability for the felines after we are gone.
