Federal Trade Commission Announces Bipartisan Rule Banning Junk Ticket and Hotel Fees Rule targets bait-and-switch pricing for live-event tickets and short-term lodging
quote:
the FTC announced a final Junk Fees Rule to prohibit bait-and-switch pricing and other tactics used to hide total prices and bury junk fees in the live-event ticketing and short-term lodging industries.
These unfair and deceptive pricing practices harm consumers and undercut honest businesses. “People deserve to know up-front what they’re being asked to pay—without worrying that they’ll later be saddled with mysterious fees that they haven’t budgeted for and can’t avoid,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan.
“The FTC’s rule will put an end to junk fees around live event tickets, hotels, and vacation rentals, saving Americans billions of dollars and millions of hours in wasted time. I urge enforcers to continue cracking down on these unlawful fees and encourage state and federal policymakers to build on this success with legislation that bans unfair and deceptive junk fees across the economy.”
The Junk Fees Rule will ensure that pricing information is presented in a timely, transparent, and truthful way to consumers of live-event tickets and short-term lodging, two industries whose pricing practices the Commission has studied in particular. Consumers searching for hotels or vacation rentals or seats at a show or sporting event will no longer be surprised by a pile of “resort,” “convenience,” or “service” fees inflating the advertised price.
By requiring up-front disclosure of total price including fees, the rule will make comparison shopping easier, resulting in savings for consumers and leveling the competitive playing field.

Now this I like. Just tell me the price up front.

Now do it for healthcare.

The FTC is clueless. It won't save people any money. They will just tack it on to the price on the front end.

The fees aren't banned, they just have to be clearly displayed. At what point has anyone seen concert tickets "starting at $55" and expected to get out of there for less than $100 per?

Marriott has never surprised me with any resort fees. It's just that the ex-wife DGAF that it cost $42 to park at one Marriott, and it was free at a different property down the street. Reading ain't hard.

That's fine. Then we can buy with informed decisions. Unlike waiting to see how much shite they piled on the bill without our knowledge or approval.

Oh for fricks sake.
I can’t comprehend how anyone would have an issue for this.
It could either help you save time and money or be net neutral. There’s no drawbacks to consumers.
There’s nothing gained by society to these sites fricking hiding fees. There’s sole purpose is to price gouge stressed out consumers

I don't know that anyone has a problem with it per se, it's how it's presented: big daddy government gonna save you billions from those eeeevil companies charging you fees on top of that $29 plane ticket!

This fee crap is just legalized false advertising.
Allows them to advertise a non existent lower price and then bait and switch later.
That garbage should be illegal in all industries.

I don’t fricking care. It’s a good thing. I see it as a win and good for consumers. They want to pay themselves on the back for doing something that helps people. Go right on ahead. I don’t give a shite

The junk fee narrative is a ploy by the current administration to attack private businesses and conduct regulatory oversight reach by saying anything they disagree with is a junk fee. This sort of ambiguous interpretation might start with something you like but it will inevitably trickle into an area you don’t like.

I remember looking for hotels in Vegas when we were stuck there during Hurricane Beryl. Some sites were advertising rates that more than doubled when you got to the checkout page. It was ridiculous and a waste of time. I hope it's those sort of things this law is targeting.

Agreed.
I know someone who was car shopping recently and they said to buy a car, the dealership wanted a $3000 car buying fee….

How sad it must be to need a boogeyman to blame anything and everything on. I'm sure the CIA and FBI are involved as well?

Exactly. I was looking at hotels and it took forever.
Even if this isn’t saving you $, it’s saving consumers a lot of time. I can quickly look at an event and decide if I want to go to it or not. Without going through the whole “is this going to cost me $200 or $350”

This won’t make one bit of difference, you have to pay whatever they charge.
Even when your wife is pregnant, and they bring in some illiterate migrant worker to take her blood pressure four times a day and charge you $400 each time.
Ya that was some BS

I am with this all the way. I score some sweet seats for a popular concert and am like, wow, $135 isn't bad. They they tack on a $58 dollar fee at checkout. frick that. Just tell me the tickets are $193 each so I can make a decision up front.

Please. Click on five hotels, read for 30 seconds each. Open SeatGeek, LiveNation, and NRGStadium.com in three different tabs. Pick seats in same area, hit checkout after a Captcha, boom, you get the all in price. Sooo hard. OMG, you charged me more for almond milk than cow milk?

It doesn't apply to car dealers. But it's not like you sign the financing documents and then get a statement 2 months later showing you owe an additional 3k. It's their fault for shopping for a car like it's 1989.
