That's not as uncommon as some may think.

Might be dementia-related.

An 88yr old locked up for 1st degree strangulation is VERY uncommon. Don't be so pretentious.

Just out of curiosity, is that taken into account?

To paraphrase Bill Burr, you have to wonder what was the last thing she said.

Well, if you want to be so pretentious as to specify "an 88yr old" then yeah, I suppose you're somewhat correct. 87 year olds do it. 81 year olds do it. 88 year olds do it.
Eldercide, geriatric uxoricide or Geriatric Spousal Murder is NOT that uncommon and it's been increasing in recent decades. It's often strangulation or suffocation (pillow over the face) although sometimes it might be poisoning or even gunshot with the occasional push down the stairs when convenient. But strangulation and suffocation are, by far, the most common means.
So, don't let your ignorance of the facts get in the way of your pretentiousness.
Elderly dementia is increasing but there are other more sinister motivations at play from time to time.
It's really nothing new, it's just been picking up steam in the past two decades.

That’s the face of a man far past the point of giving a frick

Since there didn't seem to be a backstory listed, maybe his wife was losing it and he decided to not let her suffer anymore? He looks like that because he is sad that his soulmate is gone? Maybe?

My first wife is a nurse. She runs in nurse circles. Her best friend is the head nurse at a large retirement community in NC and has been in the field for 30+ years. I used to listen to the stories. It's not uncommon. It's something they have to be on the alert for.
My current wife's best friend is the head of all nurses over the largest hospital complex in this state. I asked her about it one time and she confirmed, it happens more than people know.
Why was I so curious? It's in my nature but also ... I was dealing with very elderly parents at the time who had been married for over 70 years. I noticed some odd things happening and found out these were very common things.
Hard to explain.
You know that movie that starred Rachel McAdams and Ryan whatshisname and James Garner? The Notebook I think it was. It takes place here in SC.
Well, supposedly, it's based on a true story ... that, irl, ended in a very different way with both of them dead.
Strange things happen in people's minds when they get that old.
