Chinese man arrested for US military base drone overflight

A Chinese citizen has been charged with flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base in California where he is alleged to have recorded images of the military facility, the US Justice Department said Wednesday.

Yinpiao Zhou, 39, was arrested as he readied to board a flight to China from San Francisco, authorities said.

“This defendant allegedly flew a drone over a military base and took photos of the base’s layout, which is against the law,” United States Attorney Martin Estrada said.
...

Charging documents say detection systems at Vandenberg tracked a drone as it flew about a mile (1.6 kilometers) above the facility in late November.

Security personnel at the base, which is the launch site for space missions — including Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets — as well as missile tests, traced the drone to a nearby public park where they allegedly found Zhou with the device concealed in his jacket.

Agents who acquired a search warrant examined the drone, which contained aerial photographs of the base.

The Justice Department said Zhou is a Chinese citizen and a lawful permanent resident of the United States, and had been in China most recently in February.

Zhou did not enter a plea when he appeared in a San Francisco court on Tuesday charged with failure to register an aircraft not providing transportation and violation of national defense airspace.
...

In early 2023 the United States discovered and tracked what it called a spy balloon as it flew high above sensitive US military installations, shot it down and retrieved its large payload of electronics.

The incident prompted concerns China was scooping up vital intelligence, while Beijing said it was a civilian airship blown off-course.

A young infant Rebel used to live on Vandenberg.

That’s all I’ve got.

I don't fly drones, but here in Huntsville they won't take off if you're too close to the base or the airport. What am I missing here?

You don't have access to Chinese intelligence service spy drones.

"Zhou faces charges of failure to register aircraft, violation of national defense airspace, and not providing transportation".

But not spying or espionage. They caught him before he got back on plane to China.

SFP said this would never happen. He mocked people for suggesting that Chinese nationals pouring across our border could be spies. He said that they are all just poor economic migrants seeking a better life from their oppressive State.

This applies to registered drones and drones with active control systems that prevent them from flying over restricted airspace... Either they hacked the system to allow it or the drone control system was removed / disabled...

Against US law unless you are Google. Having served at that base the Google maps of it is pretty darn accurate

I was outside of Huntsville back in Mid November and saw a huge white drone (almost like a mini predator drone) flying over the area. It was crazy as I thought you wouldn’t be able to fly in the area.

This guy probably has a Chinese drone that doesn’t have the chip that would disable it near sensitive areas

ignoring the military component for a moment, even the FAA has rules about flying drones in restricted airspace. Someone has to police it. Apparently no one did in this instance.

The airspace is "policed" by a geofence around the area that prevents the drones from entering the airspace to include a buffer... Military installations, nuclear power plants, jails/prisons, etc normally have this geofence...

In order to fly a drone inside the geofence "legally" you have to apply for the clearance to do so...

This all applies to drones that are registered and have the control system active within the drone and its related equipment...
