I'm way late to the game and was not familiar with this quote until a few weeks ago, but I'm thinking that it may be one of the key ingredients in finding more happiness and contentedness in life.
"Comparison is the thief of joy" is applicable in so many different ways. All 5s on the survey.

Sure but I don't think comparison is a bad thing in itself. When used in moderation it serves as a good motivator for improvement. When there are professional milestones I want to achieve, for example, I look at someone and say well if they did it so can I.

For sure. It helps facilitate a healthy level of humility and ego check. For intelligent folk with a nice competitive streak, it doesn’t hurt to self govern with some friendly reminders.

My dad was not an educated or worldly man but he always told me how lucky we were to be born in the United States of America. I didn’t really know what he meant until I grew up and saw the news out of Africa, China, the Middle East, etc.

This is something I have stressed to my kids since day 1. My kids aren't quite old enough to really understand it, but I hope it clicks with them some day. I learned it much later in life than I wish I had. Life is so much easier when you don't worry about what others have. Once I started focusing on my journey and not worrying about what others were doing or had, it sort of set me free.

I agree with that quote. But I think happiness in life is really a matter of perspective.
I know people who are very well off, with great, healthy, loving families, who are constantly living in a state of "woe is me" even though MANY people would gladly trade lives with them.
I also know people who have had some financial struggles, aren't living a life of luxury, and have experienced much more personal tragedy than the aforementioned group. Yet, they feel very blessed and grateful for what they have and don't take a "life hates me approach". They have many more reasons to be down, but they have much better perspective on life.
Like everyone, there are things I don't like about myself or my situation. Things I wish were better. But when I get down I try to immediately tell myself to "STFU!!! You have it really, really good. Be thankful." That quickly changes my perspective.
