White Painted Brick

The counter top thread got me thinking, how much longer does this trend have?
There are some older homes near where I live that have been painted and the columns were changed and they look good. But I don't know if that's a trend that will be in style for much longer. The houses next to them haven't been painted. Some still look good, but others have such a bad brick color/pattern that they look horrible. But I'm not sure what else you could do to them but paint them white.

I like white painted brick.

I like brick looking brick personally. I've seen it improve about 10% of the houses painted, and IMO ruin the remaining 90%.
It's a fad that will come and go, but leave a trail of neighborhoods that look like used diapers in a row.
Most interior fads allow you to change them out 15 years after the fad has died and looks dated.
To each his own though.

Some brick looks better than others. That said, I see some neighborhoods where they are all painted white brick and I don't see how those won't all look dirty and dumb eventually. And too much of the same - with regular brick, most developments at least alternate color/style.

There are some hideous bricks out there... In some cases, painting them is a plus for sure.

Interesting question. I don't have a painted brick house, so no dog if this is becomes a fight.
I think a lot of our modern bricks aren't that attractive, and a lot look better painted, and just as important as color is texture, and painted brick is generally a nice classic texture.
The last house that I built, we used "old" brick, which I found more appealing, but probably wouldn't be appropriate for a more contemporary house.
Just my guess, painting brick will continue for quite a while.

I moved from my previous house because I hated the brick color. Was a peach/salmon colored look to it. I debated painting it, but I was too worried about doing something that would cost a lot to reverse in case I got it wrong. Not the only reason I moved but one of the things that bothered me most.
I'm also curious to see how long the board and baton look sticks around. My opinion is that brick is superior to all other exterior coatings. All of that board and baton are maintenance items to me. I don't want to have to repaint my house every 10 years.

we got ours painted last summer. i was against it, but my wife REALLY wanted it, and it wasnt a hill i wanted to die on. my position is the same as the OP's - it's a permanent change for a trend that will eventually go away, like a face tattoo or something. that said, our brick was this really weird yellowish / orangish / brownish pattern that i wasnt crazy about anyways. all in all, i still wish we hadnt done it, but it looks ok and i'm not super upset about it.

If you buy a home that was built in the 70's, 80's and some 90's, they had horrendous taste in brick. I can see why houses get painted. I have a brick home that's painted white just under the front porch, kinda like a stucco would look. I like it and don't really understand the hate it gets. People like what they like.

i don't mind the houses with salmon colored brick being painted white as long as its done tastefully, but I'm not a huge fan of painting brick. cant go back once its painted.
my house was a flip that they painted off-white and seeing the before pic of the horrible colors make sense why they did it. would i have done it? probably not because you have to maintain a painted surface more carefully.

Someone is going to make good money in the future with a laser blaster that strips paint off of brick

My current house is a weird salmon color and I hate it. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit to paint it

Painted brick is not new. If done right is timeless and looks very nice. I think a big part of painted brick was because you couldn’t get a nice reclaimed brick for a few years because of COVID.
But the white that blinds you as you drive by needs to go. White with black windows and trim and all farmhouse type design are already starting to fade away. Wonder what the new style will be

We narrowed out house search down to two houses and one of the deciding factors was the brick color. I don't want a painted white house but I don't want a hideous brick color either. There are some really bad bricks out there.
It's another fad obviously but I actually prefer the look of the black painted brick with natural wood stained shutters and posts.

Our home was a 1960s color nightmare:
-white posts/fascia
-prison grey wood siding on 75% of the house
-different shades of pink/orange brick on the front with a light gray mortar
-dark grey old shingle roof
It was heavily outdated. We decided to paint everything white because it would look good with our shutters and roof. White brick is white as can be to match the rest of the house. It looks a lot better than what we bought it as.
There are tasteful ways to paint a brick house. Modern farmhouse style is basically all white painted brick with black accents everywhere. This is some Chip & Joanna shite that I love even though everyone has been doing this since just before COVID. I am personally a fan of the cream white houses with similar accent colors. Looks a little more aged and doesn't look that bad when there's a bit of dirt on it. I pressure wash every year so It's generally pretty clean here but I do understand that white is going to show every bit of dirt that somehow ends up on our home.
You can always mix and match different brick sections of your home if it's not one uniform pattern. It really just depends on how your home is designed and the color of the brick you currently have. I would totally love a multi-colored painted brick home.

I’ve seen some good looking painted brick homes but in other than white colors. Not bad in many cases with regard to older styled homes.

All I know is that for years building scientists always preached against painted brick. Maybe times or paint formulas have changed. Still not my thing.

Painted brick only looks good if grout line is flush. If it has a deep tooled grout line, it looks bad.

Why paint pretty bricks......just like painting cypress, not my style.
