Which is the lesser evil? The transfer portal or NIL?

We can all agree CFB is complete chaos.
Transfers have immediate eligibility and billionaires are buying players. I can’t keep up.
You can actually see the results now. There are no dominate college teams this year bc of the comings and goings of rosters imo.
The 12 teams could be great or a waste of time. Maybe Boise, SMU or ASU can make a run.

Transfer portal could be controlled more. NCAA can’t stop the kids from making money now so I would have to go with NIL is worse. I do think kids should get paid. But just don’t know how to control it.

NIL. Paying players isn't new, but if we could somehow, someway get back to where you had to sit out a year if you transferred, that would mitigate alot of this bullshite.

NCAA is scared of losing more ground if it stops the transfer portal or put into place where transfers can’t move within a conference.
If I were the NCAA I would put rules into place that allows for 1 transfer without sitting and the second one you sit. Plus make the rule include no transfers within the conference the first time ie they could transfer back in the second but would have to sit. That would stop a bunch of this shite.

Transfer portal. Wouldn’t have as many switching if it wasn’t for NIL

The transfer portal went to far because in the past they restricted players movements too much.

Why cant they bring back burning a year of eligibility for transferring?

NIL lesser of two evils, it will right itself over time by basic economics. The portal is the devil.
No team will be able to have quality depth, the days of having a roster of 5 stars waiting their turn is over. Saban clearly saw it and said I’m out like a fat kid in dodgeball, not dealing with this shite.

Neither in and of itself is evil. It is the highly unregulated nature of the two combined that exacerbates things.
I could see them having 1 free transfer and then having to sit out 1 season unless a specific cause is met such as the program shuts down, a head coaching change, and other specific appeals that can be addressed individually (I would set it up using independent arbitrators and have the athletes sign a binding agreement to abide by the ruling as a condition for playing NCAA football). Of course, the grad transfer/imediate eligibility rules would still apply.

NIL is the worst and needs to be abolished!
The portal needs to be tweaked to have limitations the way transfers used to be.
All of this is ruining college sports, especially football. What a cluster! It’s not even fun anymore.

The problem with all of it is the no-sit change. Every player in the country is a free agent every year, even in the middle of a season. If players had to sit, they would be less likely to transfer.

NIL. It's regarded that major college athletes couldn't do product endorsements.
The transfer portal is the source of the chaos.

Exactly and no one is giving NIL money to someone who can’t play immediately. Putting guardrails on the transfer portal would help immensely.

portal all day. NIL destroyed the game.

It should be something like a redshirt type thing…if you play in less than 8 (I know redshirt is 4) games then you can transfer no penalty…if you aren’t seeing the field you should be able to better your position. If you’re starting every game you should have some penalty for transferring in conference. If you move up or down in conferences no penalty.

the elimination of the one-year-sit-out rule has to be part of this conversation

The NIL is the lesser in my opinion. You will always have players lost to either under the table money or NIL. The portal destroys roster/depth management and program stability. It’s hard to maintain a championship level year in and year out with the portal.

Very few transfer if not for NIL...or should I say, a lot less transfer.
