Do we have a G5 CFB Playoff champion in the next 15 years?

As much as I dislike the new era of college football, having a G5 champion would be an awesome story. Will it happen?

Any g5 have a slew of billionaire alumni?

Not a chance. I can’t wait for a G5 playoff

Maybe the Coinbase guy can buy Rice a championship

no.
i don’t see any G5 team beating 3 high end P5 teams in a row.

It would take something like:
(12) Seed Boise getting a (5) seed Indiana and then a (4) seed Arizona State to get to the Semi finals. Then you would need 2 decent upsets which isn't impossible to win it all

I have been told the 4 byes are guaranteed to the 4 conference champs, but with all the conferences dropping divisions it makes it harder for a 3 loss team to win a P4 conference (even if the Big 12 is basically a G5 conference at this point)

Well 10-2 Arizona State is about to win the Big 12 this year and id absolutely bet on a 12 seed Boise over them if that's the matchup.

Honestly they could get the 4th bye too. idk if beating another Big 12 team gets the eventually big 12 champ over a 1 loss boise.
that being said, they’ll get paired with the loser of the big 10 championship game likely.

ASU is 9-2 and could easily lose the rivalry game. I'm finger crossing and making sure I don't step on cracks and avoiding black cats, because you always pucker up in these sorts of games.
If, hypothetically, ASU wins the Big 12 and is 11-2, they aren't going to be the 12 seed. They'll move ahead even if Boise holds onto the bye slot. It's not worth talking about, but that would mean they went 11-1 when their QB wasn't hurt. They cared about hurt QB's for Florida State, so I imagine they'll at least acknowledge he didn't play against Cincinnati.
But it's all a moot point until ASU actually does it. Odds are against them.

Yep, the path would be difficult. Although it is worth noting it took a walk-off FG earlier this year for (1) Oregon to beat Boise St, at home.
Also, Boise COULD have a realistic chance of getting a bye. The rules of the CFP only say the top 4 conf. champions get a bye. It doesn't say all 4 have to be from the P4 conferences. If Boise wins the Mountain West and finishes ahead of the (likely) Big 12 or ACC conf champ in the final CFP rankings they would get a bye. Right now they are projected to be ranked ahead of any of the Big 12 teams in line for the Big 12 championship game.

Oh it's absolutely not happening for Boise this year. But I could see a path for a group of 5 team into the semi finals - where anything could happen.

the problem is they need “anything to happen” too many times. I coold definitly see them getting to the semis.
but they’re going to end up playing 2 very good P5 teams in the semis and championship and I sont see that happening.
I cant think of a G5 team in the last 25 years who could have pulled that off.

If a G5 (let’s say one of them in LA) has those type of alumni they’ll be donating to their “local” teams in the power conferences “because they actually have a chance to win it”
Just like LSU winning is supposedly good for the state but no one cares if any of the G5s do so… maybe Tulane would be good for the city

No, but if we do it will have to happen this year or next before they expand to 14 and cut the number of byes.
The recipe: a great g5 team snags the 4th seed after a power conference cannibalizes itself. That 12 seed upsets the 5 seed and the 8/9 upsets the 1 seed. That could put the G5 in the title game without having played a top 7 team. Then they just need a ton of luck.
It won’t happen, but that’s the only recipe I can think of. A G5 can’t beat 3-4 top 10 teams in a row.

07 Boise State would have been the closest off the top of my head, maybe 17 UCF. Some things have to go very right and you need the right personnel, including some crazy gifted QB that can pull a feather out of their arse. JFF wasn’t super highly recruited and could have ended up at one of those kinds of schools.
Definitely a lot of starts having to align.

G5 will be anyone not Big10 and SEC, so yes, it will happen.

I could honestly see a path for Boise this year.
Let's say the Big 12 has a 3 loss champion. Assuming they beat UNLV for the Mountain West title, Boise would get the 4th seed and a bye.
Then, let's say the 5th seed gets upset by the 12th seed. That 12th seed would move up to play Boise.
Boise wins and is in the semifinal against Oregon, a team that they only lost to by 3 points on the road earlier this year and had no problem running the ball against.
If Boise gets a big game from Jeanty, they'd suddenly be in the championship, where turnovers and injuries can quickly change the trajectory of a game.

Boise winning the first expanded playoff where they actually get a shot would be some poetic justice for the mid majors

Just a QB won’t be enough… have to have enough depth on the lines since we’re playing more games now
