I remember when I was a small child back in the late 1970s / early 1980s, it was pretty widely agreed upon that you didn't give a kid with a cold or the flu milk. As I have grown older, I have never cared for milk while sick. Rather, I gravitate towards foods that seem chemically opposite to milk: acidic juices, salty, watery soups, and so on. What kind of a weirdo wants to down a big, thick glass of milk while suffering from post-nasal drip?

Once I became a parent, I discovered that this seemingly obvious bit of wisdom has come to be seen as an "old wives' tale," with (newer) parenting books and online authorities arguing against it pretty aggressively (which in itself is a bit of a red flag; if it's so true, why do you have to try so hard to convince me it's true?).

I am curious about TD's opinion on this. All you seasonal head cold sufferers: can I interest you in a nice, cold, tall glass of milk?

I think it's just when you have a fever.

I’m suffering from a nasty cold/sore throat myself the last few days and all I’ve wanted to eat was ice cream and soup.

Definitely a fever. Milk turned sour in my stomach because of my fever. Threw up all over the place.

The ice cream / sore throat thing does make sense, and kind of goes against what I said. I think the theory was that milk leads to mucus, and that if you've got a problem with excess mucus you should avoid milk.

All I want is soup and hot tea with honey. Other than that mostly water.

Raw milk has helped my sinus issues big-time over the last 20 years. But, that's mostly preventative. don't overdo it if you have a bad cold. Better off with broth and whatnot.

In Germany, the treatment of a sore throat (regardless of the season) was to wrap your throat with a heavy scarf. It seemed to work by increasing the temperature of your throat.

The general wisdom is "milk a cold, cream a fever."

You'll be getting calcium and small albeit present protein which you'd be better off getting from protein shakes. What you really need is an influx of vitamin C when i have a cold I use e merge c powder. 1 gram of vitamin c per envelope and if that doesn't get you right do another.. I took 10 over the course of two days and it got me back to work. I just have a runny nose a few times a day now.

Yeah, I know what the current party line is. I asked my question here because I find that occasionally people here can cut through the BS when the official party line does not.

I agree with this.

I don't know if anyone else remembers Gantt Boswell from St. Paul's, but he used to tell a story about how he got "talked to" for telling their varsity QB to take vitamin C when he had a cold before an important game. Doubt he would have got that tap on the shoulder if he'd recommended a big glass of milk, even back then. Pretty sad stuff.
