Social Security Fairness Act

Did a quick search - nothing hit on this topic.
It passed the house - not sure if it has the legs to get through the senate.
Trying to understand this bill but it appears that the people getting screwed are the workers who never held government jobs.
Seems like the 3 million government workers shoulda known that their government pension would rule out any social security.
Please educate me on why this bill is so great. Thanks

But what if they paid into Social Security prior to getting a job with a guaranteed retirement? Should they get nothing? That's not fair.

If that's the case, they shouldn't have paid into it.

So somone who worked for themselves and paid 15percent tax for social security for most of their career should not receive anything back if they take a Govt job for a few years? I think they should receive what anyone else would receive that paid social security and at the same rate.

I just don’t see it that way - you opted out to get a pension job.
Need to study the bill more - feels like this is not fair to the current system though.
Regardless, SS will crash down and no one will get paid - this will only expedite that crash.

On the surface, it isn't. But government retirees are more than adequately compensated to make up the loss.

How exactly. Are you suggesting they should have broke the law? All my checks had it taken out by the employer. I asked them not to but they did it anyway!

i worked 20 plus years in corporate before moving to a state pension job to also have some guranteed income monthly outside of investments. I should get my full payments based on my years worked and what i paid in. I do not expect my benefits to pay for time i did not pay into system but i should get full benefit for what I paid in. This is a huge help for those of us who had similar career paths.

Is it getting out of the senate?
You knew the rules and jumped ship to get government to pay and pension.

You knew...when you took that government job...it would lead to decreased social security payments correct?
It's not like you won't be getting social security, and government pension money, like everyone makes it sound.

I retired from government and now work in private sector. I know I can’t get SS, but a bit pissed I can’t opt out of it. Also think it is absurd that Jeff bezos, bill gates, Warren buffet and Elon can get SS but not me because I have too much $$

I have a state pension. I also now own a business and for the most of the last five years have capped out my SS pay in.
I do ok, but not ok enough to not miss 20 grand a year I have to send to SS even though almost all of my benefit is wiped away by GPO.
If you don’t want to pay me a benefit based on what I paid in, at least let me opt out of future payments.

As it stands now, I make $20K/year or so in off-duty security work. Unfortunately, I'm considered "self-employed" for those jobs, so I get a 10-99 and have to pay income tax AND both halves of the social security tax on those earnings. Then, when I get to retirement age, the government will say "Oh, you have a pension? Guess you don't need that social security that we forced you to pay into all these years, but thanks for the donation". It's bullshite. Just exempt me from paying into SS and I'll be fine.

Social Security should have been privatized and put into the hands of those paying into it.

They wouldn’t be eligible for a pension after only working for the government for a few years.

I paid into railroad retirement (government program) for 7 years but left to return to school, you need 10 years of service to receive railroad retirement which is substantially more payout than Social Security. Should I get a railroad retirement lump sum payout for my 7 years of service.....it's a government program?

Good to know that you approve govt stealing money from your paycheck, then passing a law barring you from ever collecting it, when everyone else gets to file for their money at some point.
