I'm going to go ahead and nominate Dredd (2012) to this. I rewatched it the other day and this is just a damned good movie. The fact that Karl Urban goes full Dredd and is never seen with his helmet off is *chef's kiss*.

I'd also add (more of a personal preference than pretending they were universally loved) the Punisher movie with Thomas Jane, and Superman Returns (Brandon Routh). The Punisher is a guilty pleasure, and I felt Brandon Routh did a REALLY good job as the Reeve-esque Superman.

Sucks that they weren't able to finish the trilogy for David Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The Swedish versions are solid, but I really wanted to see the way Fincher would've handled the last two movies.

What I was going to say. I think had they changed the title it might have done much better.

Routh was solid and I liked parts of Superman Returns but I'm sorry everything plot and set piece related in that movie following the plane rescue was complete and total arse.

Kate Bosworth was a bad miscast as Lois Lane and that was made all the worse by having Parker Posey right there w/the look and acting chops to do it and instead wasting her on a lame Miss Tessmacher knockoff. Then all Supes does is lift heavier and heavier shite and we get another Lex land deal. Kal Penn as a henchman who has zero lines, not b/c he's mute, but purely b/c the henchmen got no lines? Yeah ok. The whole Superman is a deadbeat stalker father was a nice touch too.

Nah... Snyder gets a lot of shite for "not getting Superman" and rightly so but Bryan Singer should be getting just as much hell. While Signer obviously liked Donner's Superman he also clearly did not give a damn about the character or world it was based on at all.

Superman Returns

Apparently 1/3 of that plot ended up on the editing room floor. The real plot was Superman returning to Krypton because of evidence that it might have survived, finding the devastation, returning to Earth, and then finding out that the whole “signal from Krypton” was a ploy from Luther. That’s why Luther said he was “returning the favor.” Also Kal Penn was the scientist that helped with the plot and it’s why he has no speaking lines.

Yes, Kate Bosworth was a terrible Lois Lane.

Completely agree.

And in the same vein of a foreign trilogy with Daniel Craig, I was very disappointed they didn't finish out The Golden Compass. I believe they made TWO different TV shows, but I couldn't bring myself to watch them. I thought the movie was wonderfully close to the source material.

That's one of those movies I was about 30 seconds away from walking out of. Then, all of a sudden...

Some great choices.

John Carter is my go-too. That was a very good movie, and the source material is very, very rich and deep. It didn't hit at the box office, but I've never met a person who, upon watching it, didn't like it a LOT. It could have been a huge franchise if it got some traction; I tend to think of Terminator and T2. Terminator was good but didn't actually blow things out at the box office (was a mild success), but T2 was a giant. The Barsoom series could have taken off like that too.

Man from UNCLE- I put this up with John Carter, for potential to be enormous. I didn't remember it hitting the theaters, eventually watched it on stream- and immediately thought "this is great, I want more". It is exactly what I want a retro spy movie to be, and the characters were fantastic.
