I think most people would have understood and even been happy if he were cut this past offseason.

He’ll forever be tied to his draft position but I think he’s been one of the better story’s so far this season.

Is he a top 5 or 10 RT maybe not but he’s a lot better than all of us expected this season. I get it he’s not as good as expected for being a first round pick but he looks to be salvageable as an O lineman. And if that allows the Saint to focus on another area in the draft then all the better because they got many holes to fill.

Even if he's serviceable, it's a bust of a draft pick and yet another reason why we're in this shitty situation (bad cap and no great young players)

But he’s still in the league and improving. So there’s that.

He's been mid range but he actually had a good game against the Falcs. Only gave up one pressure.

He's getting reps. May be a starter after all.

He's arguably played up to his first round status so far this year. And he's also a prime example why no one on this board knows shite, because they all would have cut him after his rookie season where he sucked, under an inept Offensive coordinator and a retarded head coach.

I’m not about to shite on the guy when he’s held his own this year. He’s an average starting tackle in pass pro and top end run blocker. The pick is history now. Lots of teams would take his play this year.

This is such a shite take. The truth is he was always raw. He came from a small school. Most of these guys need time to develope and the truth is he was overwhelmed last year. He seems to have the work ethic and we know he has the physical tools. God forbid a player take a few years to develop. I wish he would have come out playing like this first and foremost but apparently you’re a bust if you don’t come out dominating.

He’s been one of the few positives of this season. That he played his best game after Allen got canned is hopefully a good sign. If DA held something against miller for inconsistencies and injuries, it’s possible the same thing was going on with penning

it's not where you get drafted, it's how you play.

he does draw a few penalties but that's the new norm in today's NFL.

Speak for yourself buddy. No I wouldn’t have cut a 1st round pick after 1 season.

First round picks rarely ever get cut. They get traded to other teams that high grades on them from college and think they can rehab them for a lesser pick.

Or the team just doesn’t try to re-sign them when their contract is up.

They have to be a colossal bust or have off field issues to usually get cut.

I just think it looks bad on the coaching staff for starting him at LT right from the jump as a rookie knowing exactly what you said.

Arden key tore him a new one that first game. I wonder what the coaching staff was looking at all summer during training camp.

I mostly agree, but you need 1st round picks to be solid in my opinion. You can’t afford to wiff on your top pick every year

I think for good or bad DA had zero to do with Penning. And as long as he keeps getting better I guess.

We've been through it but the hit/fail rates of 1st round picks are rather bad.

We're just used to hitting when we had a solid streak for 8 years.

Drafting a tackle is usually has one of the lowest bust rates per position. It’s usually one of the positions scouts get right.

He’s played better than he did the last two years and has become a steady average RT. Vast improvement from what we were expecting in the offseason. Glad to see it.

This lets us focus on getting a pass rusher and interior lineman in the upcoming draft.
