They have now coached the same number of games in their first 3 years at LSU (Gerry had less games per year back then)

DiNardo:
Overall: 26-9-1 (74.3% Winning Percentage)
SEC: 16-7-1 (69.6%)

Kelly
26-10 (72.2% Winning percentage)
15-7 (68.2%)

Pretty crazy to think how close these two are and that DiNardo is slighlty better overall.

Given what both coaches took over, please don't claim Kelly had it harder. He didn't. If anything, he had it easier since he could scout college talent to fill holes with free transfers.

Yikes.

And consider this - Dinardo made $95,000 per year at LSU. Holy crap…

DiNardo had it going his first 3 seasons at LSU, making all the right moves. It was only when Carl Reese left and Lou Tepper came on board that everything came unglued for DiNardo

You're talking about 95, 96, and 97 under DiNardo, which were good years.

So, it's not like you can say "Kelly's no better than DiNardo" right now.

Now if Kelly's next two years are like the 1998 and 99 disasters, that's a different story.

DiNardo’s teams also finished top 13 in year 2 & 3 as well.

He fell off a cliff in year 4 & 5, so hopefully BK doesn’t follow that same path.

Camp Curley was frickin' terrible as a coach, but he recruited very well. Much of DiNardo's early success built upon Hallman's haul.

Yup. LSU was too cheap to match UT's offer to Reese, and limited what kind of money DiNardo had to hire a replacement. He used it to hire his friend that was a known guru, but failed miserably.

The next year, Watts was lost the next year to Michigan State, and you had both sides of the ball turn to shite.

If DiNardo was allowed to have the highest paid coordinators in the country back then, he likely is better than Kelly by a lot.

Dinardo was also a much more likeable person than BK

Ummmm... Kelly has been given an open checkbook to hire assistants. Hell, he had one of the highest paid DCs, who he fired to only hire the highest paid DC.

DiNardo was having to bargain bin shop for DC/OC when his first guys got poached and LSU wouldn't pony up to retain them, so forgive me if I don't have Kelly not bombing out entirely makes him better.

Never forget Joe Dean!

DinNardo did very well his first three years. Things fell off of a cliff in year 4.

They had different challenges. LSU had significant talent when DiNardo took over and just needed a coach to actually give LSU a coaching advantage. DiNardo did that at first and he recruited Louisiana a lot better.

BK had the challenge of taking over a program that barely had enough players to play a game. He did a great job in year 1 with filling in the holes and having a very successful season. Year 1 was an A. Year 2 was successful, but a what could have been feeling if not for the D. Year 3 was going about as expected until Saturday. Disaster of a performance and he needs to right the ship quick and finish the season strong or he could start going the way of DiNardo too.

Dinardo inherited a team that had a lot of talent. Kelly inherited 39 scholarships…with some talent. Dinardo had 2 all-SEC caliber defensive ends, a freshman all-SEC nose guard, really good Defensive backs, serious speed and talent on offense (Kevin Faulk, Kendall Cleveland, Eddie Kennison, etc). A defense that was ranked #1 in the SEC the previous season. Kelly had more of a mess to deal with.

He lost Carl Reese and Morris Watts. And replaced them with Lou Tepper and some goofball I can't remember.

Stop with this. First off that was the bowl game number everyone regurgitates.

Secondly, he had free reign to bring in as many transfers as he wanted with the portal and free transfer rules, which DiNardo did not have the opportunity to do. DiNardo had to trust high school kids and develop the ones he inherited for the majority. Kelly was able to literally find top tier, experienced/proven college players to fill his holes, and to his credit he did, but that is why people acting like he pulled off some miracle in year 1 is just stupid.

Rarely can you say once assistant coaching decision tanked a program. But that is what happened. Texas/Mack Brown poached Reese. LSU went into the 1998 season with the highest preseason expectations in well over a decade. They were ranked No. 7 to start the season and picked to win the SEC West. It was an experienced team with guys like Herb Tyler and Kevin Faulk returning. LSU then lost a ton of one-score games when the defense simply couldn't hold the lead. Rather than doing what Kelly did this year and not letting one unexpectedly awful coaching performance manifest further, Dinardo stuck with Tepper. With a bad defense and weaker offense (compared to 1998), LSU tanked and Dinardo was fired. It was as remarkable a fall from grace as we had seen...until Orgeron came along and did the same thing

DiNardo brought back the magic, but it was fleeting and left TS. Too sad because I think had LSU given him a better budget, it would have worked.
