I got my son a 300 blackout in AR when he was 9. He has killed 5 deer with it.

This.

Accubond long range seems to be a good bullet as well.

Another vote for 6.5 grendel in AR-15

HOWEVER!! If you want to step up to an AR-10.

Then I’d say 6.5cm, 7mm-08, or .308.
An AR-10 in .308 with an 18” barrel and an adjustable gas block is easy shooting.
Ammo is super easy to find and enough for anything in the south.

Cast my vote for the 6.5 Grendel as well. I’ve had mine for 15 years. Very little recoil. Packs a punch. Ammo is readily available.

Bass pro has a smith and Wesson mp sport for about 700$ tbats a decent deal on a rifle that will retain its value versus a Frankenstein rifle.
Just make sure it’s 1-8 twist so you can shoot heavier bullets such as 64gr fusion.
I have personally shot or sat with my kids and killed at least 5 whitetails at ranges up to 200yd with the fusions and they wreck deer.

You can get several different calibers in your upper receiver. Honestly its all about where you are and the animal you are shooting and the bullet. 4/6 of my kids killed their first deer with an AR chambered in .223. I live in south Texas and the average doe is like 80 lbs. and a mature buck will weigh 140-165 lbs. I shoot a 62 grain federal fusion and it performs great. Also about practice and shot placement.

I bought a Sulzer upper in 6.5 Grendel years back. Really liked the round, so also bought a Ruger American Ranch in the Grendel. 90% of my hunts in the last 8 years or so have been made packing one of those 2 guns.

I have a few AR 15’s in different calibers, the 6.8 spc and 300 ham’r are my favorites by far for deer and hogs.

I built a 6.5 Grendel last year and deer hunted with it. Shot two deer and neither went farther than 30 yards. Used the Barnes tac-tx. Essentially no recoil.

I custom built mine, which you probably aren’t looking to do. But if you do, you can build an absolute tac driver.

I got a Sulzer AR in 6.5 Grendel. Love it. Great caliber for this platform. Put some decent optics and a good trigger on it and it could be a forever rifle.

Why not a bolt gun in 308 or 270? If I get an AR it's definitely going to be in 556. I'll always want to be able to get ammo.

AR-10 in .308? Best of both worlds.

My daughter has killed 3 bucks and I've killed 1. Great round with minimal recoil.
