Today is souls to the polls day across the south. It’s the Sunday where black churches walk/drive to the polling station following service.

They often walk to the polling station locked arm to arm, with the church pastor leading the way.

My question: why is this only an African American thing? Do white southerners who attend Sunday service have a similar thing?

When I was a kid I used to ask my mom why our church services were so boring. Why can’t they be fun like the black churches?

You know how far it is between many peoples churches and voting stations?

And what would the point be? Can't vote today. I'm aware of where the voting booth is.

From my experience white southerners do not want politics in their church.

Perhaps, some people go to church to worship and not as yet another way to put on a show and say:"Look at me!".

This is a pretty new thing that the media wants you to believe has been widespread and standard throughout the south for decades.

I can’t find any reference to it in news media printed prior to 2020.

ETA: I’m finally finding stuff written back in the 2010s. I’ve lived in the south most of my life, and lived in a district that was roughly 50/50 white & black and have never heard of this until the last election cycle.

(White) Southerner raised in an all black church, never heard of this. Not saying it isn’t a thing but wasn’t for me/us.

I can't speak for anywhere else but I've personally participated in 2 prior to 2020 while working on campaigns

What kind of lunatic wants their church to be a department of a political party?

I've never seen it from church. Usually church goes to an event closer to the polls and then they walk from there.

That would be racist.

It didn't become a thing until early voting became a thing, and even then, for a long time early voting didn't happen on weekends. This has been a thing for 10 years or less. It's not some time-honored tradition going back to MLK or anything like that, which the media wants you to believe. That said, I also don't see anything wrong with it. I think it's good. We need more God-fearing Christians voting.

Hopefully they remember all the souls they murder on a daily basis and decide to turn from the wickedness.

It started within the last 15 years after early voting (absentee in-person voting) was expanded to weekends - Saturdays initially. Local elections officials started doing early voting on Sunday also - souls to the polls. I haven’t seen any evidence of it increasing turnout for Dems. I suspect it’s the same hardcore Black Dems that would vote Democrat anyway.

Most modern Black churches are not churches. They are political action committees disguised as centers for spiritual guidance.

Not saying that DOESN’T happen at White churches.

It’s just become standard for many Black churches.

I've read some sketchy stuff about AME's but I don't know what to make of it.
