Remember it like it was yesterday.
We left Kenner and drove up Airline past the Snake Farm, and Roussel's, and picked up the State Trooper's son Joey Tamburello in LaPlace.
We drove past Hopper's and Bluebird's; 'Sugar Sugar' by the Archies playing on WTIX.
I remember our seats were behind the goal past in the SEZ, because the end zone was painted orange with a big blue 'A U'.
LSU scored on the first play of the game on a halfback option pass from Jimmy Gilbert to Andy Hamilton.
Auburn and Pat Sullivan came back and took the lead, but LSU was ahead 21-14 late when Mickey Zofko seemingly tied it up.
But George Bevan and Bill Thomason had other ideas, blocking the extra point to preserve the win.
Final 7th ranked unbeaten LSU 21 5th ranked Auburn 20.
LSU would lose at Jackson the next week to Ole Miss and Archie Manning, 26-23, blowing a 23-12 4th quarter lead.
That loss would ultimately cost LSU a long shot at a NC.
The Cotton Bowl invited 8-1 LSU to play #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, then reneged on LSU and invited 8-2 #11 Notre Dame instead.
LSU turned down a Bluebonnet Bowl berth, then shut out Tulane 27-0 to finish 9-1 and in the final Top Ten.

I used to look for the HoLSUm bread sign when we took Airline. Don't remember exactly where it was.
The LSU was tiger striped.

I was there. Overcast sky. Sat high up in the curve near sea. Went to the Tiger and the Keg that day. Lot of drunk frat boys.

I was a freshman that year. That was a day game.
I remember a friend and I got in line very early so when they opened the gates we would get choice seats.
We were able to score seats on about the 30 yard line west side around row 10. Great seats and when the Tigers executed that trick play to start the game it was bedlam.
That game was a classic and we were fortunate to be there.

Auburn was a very strong team that year, and also the next year when we shocked them in a slogfest on the road

Why did they paint AU in the endzone?

I’ve got you beat by 1 year. My first game was 10/26/68 against TCU. My dad won season tickets for that season and took each child to one game. LSU won 10-7. Our family listened to the games on the radio but this was the first time any of us got to go to a game. My dad and I bonded over LSU sports, especially football and baseball. The last game he saw was the 2003 National Championship on TV. He passed away in June 2004. I miss him everyday but especially when I attend LSU football and baseball games.

One of my best friends at LSU in late ‘90s grew up in Auburn country. We went to LSU at Auburn in ‘98 when LSU won to rise up to #6 in country (before biggest collapse within a season ever for us).
Anyway, my friend’s dad was really cool to us during that trip. He was starting FB on that Sullivan Auburn team. He didn’t touch the ball much but said his biggest sports regret was getting his number called on a play action FB streak down the sidelines. Sullivan laid it out perfectly to him but he dropped it. He said it would’ve been a TD and he always felt the reason they lost. I think the play was late 3rd or 4th quarter.

I was in graduate school at that time living in the married students apartments. It was raining most of the morning, and my daughter, then only a few months old, and was coughing all morning, so the wife and I decided not to attend the game. About a half hour before kickoff, our daughter was resting and had not coughed for a time, so the wife told me to go to the game. Just as I walked into the stadium, that great halfback pass TD happened. It was a great day!

That seemed to be a going practice in college football from 1969-79 to assign an end zone to each participant team. It kind of nullified a key aspect of home-field advantage.

I was at that game with my older brother. Great game! Several years later I met a guy playing golf with an Auburn hat. Told him that was the hardest hitting game I had ever seen. Told me he played on Aub offensive line in that game across from Mike Anderson. On their first offensive play Anderson didn’t care where the ball was but got him on ground and kept hitting him until the whistle. Said it was a hell of a game.
