Americans spent $17 billion on lottery tickets in 2023, which breaks down to an average spend of $50.19 per person. However, residents of some states tend to be more inclined to test their luck than others.

Total amount spent on lottery tickets in 2023: $176,273,839
Average amount spent per person: $38.40

I would have expected Louisiana to be far higher per person,

After volunteering for litter pick up for Beautify the Boot I can verify all the non winning scratch offs are tossed out the window at stop lights

I had a friend that would driver around Memphis and pick up used lotto tickets and then enter them into the Play-It-Again draw. Don't know if he ever won but his odds were better than the individuals that were actually playing scratch offs.

I’ve spent about $25 on lottery tickets in my lifetime. After the time last year when one of the big ones (mega millions) got to a record high and a californian won it, followed by another californian like two blocks away from the first big one won the other big one (powerball) I quit. I’m convinced it’s rigged. There’s just no way you can convince me that california and new york legitimately win the most big jackpots, when they grow to over 750 mill or more. It has to be rigged. Something’s amiss.

It’s a dummy tax.

Really gets humorous when people at the gas station are spending an extra $20 or $50 just because the pot is 4 or 5 times what it normally is.

$40 Million for these poor dumbasses was only worth $10 in quick picks. But a $200 million pot is worth shelling out $60.

Truly a dummy tax.

California alone has 10X the population of Louisiana.
