Auto repair places are the most dishonest businesses…

They tried to sell me on a new air filter, I said sure, do you have the part in stock? They said surprisingly they do…rare filter size.
Grabbed food next door and asked for the old filter when I returned to use my air compressor on and they couldn’t provide it. Obviously didn’t pay but I bet they scam so many people.

If you think that's bad you should see roofers...

It literally takes longer to get an air filter out of the box than it does to replace it.

Keep sending the emails honey, I got a new bass boat to pay for

Air filters seem to be one of the easy money making scams for auto places. You can set your watch by them removing and showing your air filter to you to replace. One time I did actually have them replace it and the very next oil change my man did the same pitch with the filter he just replaced the prior visit.

Did you expect him to dumpster dive for your air filter? If you wanted it back you should’ve said so up front.

I get air filters at pepboys and replace them in like 1 minute. And I don't know shite about fixing cars.

Go to shite shops get shite work, its pretty simple.

Doctors offices are up there right above real estate agents.

How often do you think that they tell a customer that something expensive needs replaced or repaired because the code reader reads a code that says that it potentially could be a number of things but it also could be a false reading and nothing actually needs to be repaired?

Taint no such a thing as a false reading. The sensor can be faulty and trigger a code but the sensor needs to be replaced at a minimum. If you got a code light you got an issue bru.

Changing your air filter can drastically improve gas mileage. So most people ironically come out ahead by paying triple the price for the mechanic to replace it.

They don't diagnose or troubleshoot - it's remove and replace.

exactly that is why if you do find a fair and honest mechanic shop hang on to them like gold. I have been going to local shop for years and won't any of my vehicles anywhere else.

I know that people should “know better”, but at a certain point, why are so many mechanics just socially accepted con artists? Is it really too much to ask for people who didn’t grow up with a dad showing them under the hood not to get ripped off when putting something as important as your car in the hands of someone who’s supposed to fix it? People don’t want to be told the thing they travel 80 MPH in is in dire need of repair and then not do it.
ETA: There’s a difference between upselling and outright saying you NEED something which is what a lot of shops do. I know you can go around and look for a better price, but again, the reputation of mechanics should probably be much lower considering the hassle.

I was out of town and my wife went to Take 5 to get the oil changed in her vehicle. They told her they were "fresh out" of conventional 5W-30 and that they needed to use full synthetic. She called me and I told her to just do it. Then the tech said that she could no longer go back to conventional once you switch to synthetic. They also tried pulling the air filter trick but I had changed it a few weeks prior.

Come back and talk to us when you have replaced the air filters on a 2016-up 3.0 twin turbo Infiniti Q50.
You will be singing a different tune and probably paying somebody who knows what they are doing to figure out why your car now has a check engine light on and runs like shite.
