There’s no denying with the current crop of wide receivers dominating in the NFL, LSU is without a doubt WRU. But who could be considered the founding member? Michael Clayton? Josh Reed? Or did it really start w OBJ and Landry?

Carlos Carson.

Against Rice (77-0) 5 catches, all for touchdowns.
201 yards.

The next game against UF his first catch was a TD. Six TD in 6 catches. Still an NCAA record.

2 Time pro bowler. 10 year NFL career 80-89.
KC Chiefs Hall of Fame.

Wendell Davis is the first star I remember but Josh Reed was the beginning of the string of WRs and won the Biletnikoff.

The reasons I say Josh Reed is he helped usher in the re-birth of LSU Football and LSU going in the greatest run of success in its history.

He was instrumental in us winning the 2001 SEC championship.

He was the 2001 Bilitnikoff winner for greatest WR in the country.

He was first team All-American.

He broke and set all the most meaningful receiving records.

Josh Reed is the founding member.

That was WAAAAAY before LSU was WRU. It didn’t become consistent until at least Josh Reed but even then it wasn’t enough consistency to be considered WRU. Beckham maybe? It just went into overdrive the last 10 years or so. Maybe less.

We can go back decades and find great WRs here and there.

But if we are talking modern LSU football, it was probably Dwayne Bowe that started the trend of ELITE LSU receivers.

Before that, sure there was an occasional Carlos Carson, Josh Reed or Michael Clayton.

But it seems like starting with Bowe, we’ve basically always had at least one absolute stud WR.

I agree with this. There was a gap between Josh Reed, and the next lunch.
That draft class with Bowe , Buster Davis, and early Doucet was really great. Michael Clayton was a good receiver. He was just a good overall talented receiver. You can look in the 90s and see other guys that were really good you can look in the 80s and see Davis and Martin that were dominating. You can look in the 70s and see Carlos Carson and Andy Hamilton other ones that were really really good, but if we’re talking your run, you have to go back to the Bowe’s draft class.
