law include persons acting as designers for single-family residences up to 4,000 square feet.

If the guy who have called himself a draftsman he would be clear. He can’t use any form of “ architectural “ in the title of his services.

Why is this such a big deal? Are they having trouble finding an architect to review the plans, make changes if necessary then seal them? The drafting work is probably done. Probably need a civil engineer to seal the foundation plans and/or any specialized beam lengths, a PLS to seal the property and drainage survey and an architect to seal the plans.

I know it’s additional cost than just a “designer” but if you’re going to build a 7000 square foot home, I mean get it done right. Especially the foundation and drainage.

The work done with this designer is more than likely not a total loss. They probably have a really good starting point on the “plans” and more than 75% complete.

Alt least now he doesn’t have to hire a designer.

Customer is the idiot, but yes if he called himself a draftsman it’d be 100% legit. Customer should have read his contract.

A mamsiom costing well over a million dollars in Baker of all places? And you go with someone off of FB to design it? Then get suspicious and question
it when asked for an additional $500?

Sure he can. There’s nothing illegal about calling oneself an architectural designer.

Same thing happened to me. Nobody should ever hire Art Vandelay. He’s not really an architect. He’s only pretending to be an architect.

Look at this quote right here. I can't tell you how many times I hear as a contractor "well I found a guy that'll do it at 1/2 the price" and my response is always "I'd jump on it then if price is your only concern"

quote:

"He gave us a price we couldn't refuse," he said.

To me, the most shocking aspect of this story is that someone is trying to build a dream home in fricking Baker.
