Thinking of a Camry or Accord for around 10k. Any advice on which year's model to target? All the one in my range look to have about 100-150k miles.

If accord just ask about when the timing belt was last changed.

Get him a Subaru if you’re worried about him getting a girl pregnant before he graduates.

Old heads on here will tell you to buy a beater because he’s 16

Buy something reliable even if more expensive. The headache alone isn’t worth it if you buy a beater and have to keep dumping cash into it

Whatever you're comfortable with him wrecking, and still feel like he'll be safe

Used Volvo
Used Toyota
Used Honda

IMO in that order

He’s a boy, get him a truck, not a car!

Those tiny little smart cars are probably in that price range. He can probably save money on a gym membership also by bench pressing and curling it as well.

I had a 2001 Camry that I put 190K miles on before I gave it away, and the only repair I remember is replacement of a brake caliper.

I presently have a 2002 Toyota Avalon with only 145K and I think I will drive it until I die or it does. Doesn't have the handling of my Porsches but very easy and comfy to drive.

Both models are roomy interior and enough trunk space. The Avalon has a 305hp V-6, the Camry I had was a 4-cyl. but also comes with a 6. About the only thing he must do is change the oil as recommended and buy a battery every few years. Get him a kit including flashlight, jumper cables (he may wish to help someone else), a hydraulic jack, and a real lug wrench.

Not familiar with newer models and all the modern bells and whistles but find most of it unnecessary. Far as I know Toyotas are still considered very reliable. Would not go for a Corolla, or anything small.

15-ish-year-old Toyota Avalon. Big, nice, safe and extremely reliable. He’ll have a sweet comfy ride he can be proud of. Yes they’re kinda grandpa cars, but that’s what makes them great everyday vehicles.

Plus, you can get a really nice one for $10k.

Another choice would be a late-2000s Buick Lucerne for all the same reasons. GM has a well-earned reputation but the G-body sedans were a bright spot. Tough as nails and cheap/easy to fix.

This website is great for finding out what year models have particular problems.

My 16 year old just got his license today, and I’ve got my eyes set on an old Lexus RX350 or something similar sized. I want to get him in a small SUV- I feel like it’s safer than a car, and it will hopefully hold up to Shreveport streets better. The Lexus is pretty cool looking to me, and I know it will last forever if maintained properly. We’re not in a hurry just yet. He can’t save a dollar to save his life, so we’ve got some work to do before we’re seriously car shopping.
