Theater Owners Plan to Spend $2.2 Billion to Upgrade the Moviegoing Experience

“Consumers today are very demanding and they want to have a range of things that they can do in any given setting,” O’Leary said. In some cases, that means adding pickleball courts, ziplines, arcades, bowling alleys and more attractions to keep moviegoers busy at theater complexes, in addition to dining and cocktails.

Good luck. I know it's just past of getting older, but there are no movies I wouldn't rather watch in the comfort of my own home.

How about we focus on keeping the ICEE machine working before we add the zip lines? It’s the only concession I like and it never works at my local Regal with the only IMAX (fake) screen in the city.

I noticed at the theater in Gonzales that parents seem to drop their kids off at the movie part and go bowling. I mainly noticed this because a number of those kids then went and snuck into the rated R Deadpool and Wolverine.
I was very proud of them. Kids need to be able to sneak into rated R films, it's like a tradition.

what's killing them is that movies go from in theaters to streaming/available to rent very quickly now. Most people are just waiting out that short period and watching it at home.

Like newspapers investing billions to have color copy everything!!! Cool man... I'll read on the computer like I always do.
I have no desire to even be around family more than I have to much less pay more than the price of owning a film to go sit next to strangers and listen to their coughs and paper crinkling while I'm trying to enjoy something.
The alternative isnt watching vhs on a 17 inch tube any more. I have a 65 inch in my bedroom and a 70 in the living room. Popcorn costs me 30 cents a bag., And traffic is shite.

I've been spoiled by the comfy reclining seats at AMC Clearview.
When Dune 2 came out, I got tickets for Imax, not realizing the seats were the old school stadium kind. I was pissed the entire movie.

Kind of how I feel. I saw the newer Top Gun in theaters and the last Dune movie.
They've done a lot already with the way more comfy chairs and far improved food. But it's still like $80+ for 2 people to go and have an appetizer a main course and a couple drinks

I don't care how good the seats are in the theater, or how engaging the screen is, or how awesome the movie sounds. Nothing can be better than not having to deal with other people on their phones while I'm watching a movie.

We have an Xscape Theater that we go to with the reclining seats and it’s super roomy. Dolby Atmos sound and massive screen. Don’t really go anywhere else at this point as a result.

any old farts like me remember Sensurround movies like Earthquake, Rollercoaster, and others from the 70s when they mounted massive woofers to shake the seats?

I still enjoy going to movies. All I'm interested in is maintained seats, a clean place, and normal pricing.

the last movie I saw in a public theater was Black Hawk Down when it was released. I have a nice home theater setup and can drink my own beer, eat whatever I like, turn on subtitles when needed, rewind to a scene if needed, and pause it when I need to go piss ... I'm not missing anything.
I'd probably go see something in IMAX if I lived close enough to one but I don't.

Movies aren't good enough to pay those prices anymore. Hollywood refuses to produce anything that people want and more or less produces what values they want you to have.
And other people, and their lack of proper etiquette ruined movie experiences. Good luck getting that part figured out without raising prices.

Not entirely true. People want mindless blockbusters, sequels, comic book films, etc. So that's what hollywood produces.

This. They should spend the money keeping shite from streaming in a matter of months or weeks (or even days when they are simultaneously released on streaming platforms). That's what is killing their business more than customer experiences at the theaters.

For $20 a month you can go to up to 3 movies a week in any format (IMAX,Dolby,etc) at any AMC theater.
